That's rubbish loads of things can cause low bp not just problems with your adrenaline glands! Also also bp can be raised in lots of ways depending on why it is low in the first place for example laying down and raising your legs above your head, I will be sure to phone the school of nursing tho and tell them to take low blood sugar off their list of things to look out foe when diagnosing low bp! If you are not medically trained then I dont think you should go against a doctors medical advice, and if you were you would know that without having a proper medical history in front of you and all the facts you wouldn't go against the advice given anyway !

I've not read the whole thread so forgive me if I'm repeating. When I was 40+11 I stopped feeling my baby move so often, I went to hospital where they monitored me... Baby was fine but 'sleepy' they made me drink a bottle of lucozade and within only 10 minutes baby was having a party. So it might get your baby going too so I wouldn't drink it endlessly.

Had a GTT yesterday at 28 weeks and the antenatal clinic gave me Lucozade to drink as the glucose for the test. Can't be that bad!!!

benne81 · 30/06/2011 22:16

Kara - I'm a doctor!!! Trained for 6 years at university and now 7yrs post qualification. There are many reasons for low bp and low blood sugar but believe me drinking a bottle of lucozade a day is not going to help keep your blood pressure up and is nonsense medical advice not based on any medical science and shouldn't be recommended to pregnant women.

benne81 · 30/06/2011 22:21

In the GTT test you are given the lucozade so we can see how well your blood responds to the sugar load (ie does your pancras produce enough insulin) if you have gestational diabetes your blood sugar level will remain high.

benne81 · 30/06/2011 22:22

That should be how the body responds not blood.

Tortoise · 30/06/2011 22:26

I drank litres of the bloody stuff when pregnant with DD1. Couldn't stomach drinking anything else without feeling sick. Had no problems in pregnancy and DD1 seems fine (now age 8). My teeth are now full of fillings though!

Of course this doesn't mean its a good idea to drink lots of it!

pinkytheshrinky · 30/06/2011 22:29

But gestational diabetes is not caused by having too much sugar - agree that the amount of glucose in lucozade makes the pancreas work harder but for healthy people this is not a problem. Having it as your only drink for your entire pregnancy cannot be a good thing but the occasional one will do no harm. Lots of things raise blood sugars really rapidly including white bread.

Everything in moderation for a healthy person is completely fine. Agreed that the thing about blood pressure is a crock of shite though but benne81 you are slightly over stating your case when you say that is could cause GD

pinkytheshrinky · 30/06/2011 22:33

And I have had four babies and have drunk a fair bit of lucozade during that time - I have never ever had GD or even a whiff of it even though I am an older Mummy - I do however have a child with type 1 diabetes but that has fuck all to do with anything

KaraJS · 01/07/2011 01:03

Then you should know that having a lucozade a day does not make you run the risk of getting gd, it is hormones and weight gain that are the problem and I can't see a lucozade making you pile on enough weight to do that! and you should know better than to tell people to go against medical advice you should tell them to get a second opinion ,

KaraJS · 01/07/2011 01:44

Low blood pressure can be caused by dehydration, don't athletes and people if their ill drink lucozade to combat dehydration? Maybe this is why some people are told to drink it ( if your dehydrated due to morning sickness) obviously if you can stop the dehydration then bp will improve

benne81 · 01/07/2011 13:55

Phewey!!! - I really didn't mean to start such a confrontational heated debate. I just wanted to give people some of the medical facts that it is best to be aware of. I have never said in any of my posts that drinking lucozade will cause gestational diabetes just that it will put you at increased risk of GD (esp if you are already high risk) which I think everybody agrees with. I then seem to have got into a nonsensical tit for tat debate randomly about blood pressure! All I wanted to get across to people is that lucozade is not a healthy drink and is therefore not known to have any health benefits and really any doctor should know this and shouldn't really be advising women to drink it regularly (I used to work with a top diabetes consultant who despairs at lucozade, supermalt, red bull etc being marketed as healthy). obviously we are all grown ups and are sensible and anything in moderation is fine (esp if you've got morning sickness and its the only think that makes you feel half decent) but remember one can of lucozade = 21 teaspoons of sugar = unhealthy! Sorry for all hassle peeps!

deo357 · 01/07/2011 14:01

well i started the thread & after all your debating, i think its fair to say maybe not a can a day but one or two or three a week would be ok !!
