Mandy

I've just seen this (haven't been on so much recently, and didn't even know you were pregnant, so congratulations). I'm sorry you are having such a worrying time. I haven't got any good advice really, as only you and your dh can decide what's right for you. I know what I'd do in the circumstances, but that's my decision, not yours. Good luck at the hospital (are you going to Treliske?). I hope that it helps you to sort your thoughts out.

I am thinking of you. You know where I am if you want to email me.

Hugs

Mandy - you sound like me - although I had a nuchal scan which came back as screen positive.

I had the Leeds quadruple test (which cost £98.00. Your mw/nurse takes the blood and you post it on to Leeds. That got my risk down to 1:1500 which we felt was low enough not to go on to amnio.

I also read a lot of Thomcat's posts aboher daughter, which I have to say swayed me considerably when considering what I would do if I did have an amnio and it was positive for DS. Thank you Thomcat!!

Good luck whatever you decide Mandy.

Mandymoo · 18/11/2005 20:54

well, went to the hospital today , spend literally 2 mins with the dr (who didnt even know i was coming) and was basically told my only option is to have an amnio. Was booked in for one next wed but midwife rang me to say there had been a mistake as there is no clinic on a wed so have now been booked in for 28th Nov. I have to be honest and say that i dont really think i'm going to have it - 1:150 is not a high risk to me. I asked about scans but was told that there arent any trained sonographers in Cornwall who can carry out the necessary scan!

Ohhhh, that gave me shivers all the way up my legs and down my back allyco

Ohhh Mandymoo, you poor thing. Well hon' it's just a case of now weighing up how much you want to know and whether you want to put yourself through an amnio to find out. It's a biggie and a toughie and only you can make that decision. We can all be here to support you and talk you through it etc. I'll gladly speak with you, answer your questions etc. I'm happy to give you my number now online if that's what you eant. I wish i could make the decision for you babes. All I can say is that it really will all be ok in the end, whatever you decide, it really will all be ok, in the end, okay...
Let me know if I can do anything.

Good luck with whatever you do, you sound as though you have a good head on your shoulders and also sound very supportive.

Be thinking of you.

PS: nice to see you TC and thanks for your posts.

ThomCat · 18/11/2005 21:25

Hey Butty baby!
Yeah, just sorry you didn't get some real concrete answers yesterday. Feeling it for you mate.

butty · 18/11/2005 21:29

Hey TC, how you doin??

Dont worry about it, i was just kidding myself in the first place!!!!
I have decided that i will stick with GDD as stated yet again but as there is no forums or support groups online for it, i have spoke with others on here today and am really dedicated and determined to set one up for anyone and everyone who just wants to talk about it or gain extra advise or support.
I think the outcome of yesterday has suddenly changed my prospective on things and there must be loads of people in the same situ who never get a DX.
Hopefully speak to you soon, u been a great help.

Butty.xxx

ThomCat · 18/11/2005 21:38

Atta girl Butty, lovin your strength and positivity. Well done for turning round a frustraing situation. TC xx

butty · 18/11/2005 21:41

Cheers TC,

All that is needed now is a few more people to get things going, i have 5 deffos in the same situ that want to help and that also think its a good idea.

We shall see!!!

ohhhh Mandymoo im sorry you are going through this worry at the moment

I was given a 1:96 chance of Downs while pg last year....i was 32. Luckily i was able to have the scan at the Royal Free in london. It showed no abnormalities as far as all known measurements etc were concerned. They pushed for me to have an Amnio but i refused....anyway June last year a had a beautiful baby boy ....and no downs....nothing is ever certain. But i can remember vividly the turmoil inside of me at the time. Thinking of you

4kids · 19/11/2005 11:18

Do you know if your carrying 1 baby? cos if its twins the results on the % of downs is higher (it gives a false result)thats why if you know your having twins they don't do the blood test because of inacurate readings .Good luck.

Mandymoo · 19/11/2005 14:11

4kids - i'm only carrying one baby. X

Mandymoo- can i ask you a question. If the baby has downs would you still keep the baby or would you decide to abort? You dont have to answer this question in public as i know everyone thinks differently and has different situations.
3yrs ago may result for ds1 came back 1:106.
I didnt do the amnio as i knew i was going to keep the baby whatever the result. I did though spend alot of time working out the mathematics of the result compared to the risk of miscarriage from the amnio. (not sure how i worked it out now) but the chance of miscarriage was greater than the risk of having downs.
I was also told that it the baby was not to have downs it may still have another type of disability- he has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. (i know of other parents having high risk results and there babys came out fine, i also know someone who was told they were at low risk from there results and didnt need the amnio but the child was born with downs. Im just being honest with you, Good luck with you decision.

lilianna · 19/11/2005 15:27

just read below and made a few mistakes in my writing but im sure you can work it out (sorry)

xmasdust · 25/11/2005 22:13

Well, i had my amnio on Wed. Not a pleasant experience but got the phone call today to say my baby doesnt have downs. I obviosuly feel extremely relieved but am now worried about miscarrying. Consultant said to give it a week and then assume all is ok but every little second is dragging and i just want to know all is ok.

Anyway, thanks for all your support X

xmasdust · 25/11/2005 22:14

btw xmasdust is my xmas name!!

christmonkey · 25/11/2005 23:29

on the result, xmasdust, you must be so relieved! Just look after yourself and get some rest best of luck with the rest of the pg!

Freckle · 26/11/2005 09:50

Excellent news for you. Don't worry too much about the miscarriage risk. When I had a CVS, which carries the same risk, I was told that the bulk of the risk related to triggering a miscarriage during the actual procedure. I was told there was no need to take any special precautions afterwards but to carry on as normal.

Needless to say I insisted on spending the next week with my feet up with dh running around after me .

ssd · 26/11/2005 10:20

xmasdust, I went through the exact same thing and can remember the relief when it was good news. Just try to take it easy, I was told the first 48 hours were important, after that just take it as easy as poss...

pacinofan · 26/11/2005 13:05

Hi xmasdust, so glad you and your baby are fine. You're through the worst of it, just take it easy and enjoy your other half looking after you! I am almost 3 weeks post amnio, and I was exactly the same as you are, worrying after it was done. Try not to and relax, you can really enjoy your pregnancy now. Enjoy your weekend, xx

Ps - are you finding out baby's sex? We decided to, much to our surprise, the amnio changed things for us. Delighted to say we are expecting another girl so can now go ahead and sort through dd's baby clothes and discard all the boy's names we had lined up (I was convinced 'she' was a 'he')!

Mandymoo · 26/11/2005 21:48

Pacinofan - thanks for your reply. I saw my midwife today as i was having crampy pains but she found a strong heartbeat straight away (although i've still got some pains. It was so good to hear that!

I AM going to find out the sex - i wasnt going to at all but since all the amnio stuff etc, like you, i just want to know. I almost detached myself from being pregnant for a few days while i was waiting for the amnio, and now i just want to bond with my baby bump. I know my family will moan about it, i might just say that i'm not going to find out!!

Thanks for your all help and support X

Hi Mandy. So glad that things have turned out well for you. I have been thinking about you. It's good that the midwife managed to find that heartbeat straight away too. Just relax and try to stay calm. Good luck with everything.
