Are subsequent babies always bigger?

My first baby weighed in at 9lb 2oz. No idea how we made one so big as me and DH are both on the small side, but there you go. Now I'm 4 months pregnant with number two and am looking huge already. Just wondered if those of you who have had more than one baby have found that the next ones are always bigger?
I know it's more to do with head circumference rather than weight, but the thought of this one being even bigger than DS1 does make my eyes water.

Sorry OP for the following info :o :o

My first was also 9lbs 2oz
My second was 11lbs 8 oz Shock
My third was 12lbs 3oz Shock Shock

I hope, for your sake, that you don't follow my pattern (and neither me nor my DH are big either!) :o

TyNobdieJigz · 10/06/2011 19:50

Ds 3 years was 6lb 6oz
Dd 8 months 5lb 13oz

ohbabybaby · 10/06/2011 19:58

DS1: 8lbs 12oz, head circumference 37.4cm
DS2: 7lbs 12 oz, head circumference 34.0cm

Both were 40w + a day or two, and I put on the same amount of weight with both. There was a comment further above about smaller gaps resulting in smaller 2nd babies, maybe there is something in that (20m gap).

I have to say I was very aware DS2 was smaller, and it was MUCH more comfortable in late pregnancy. I looked huge with DS2 early on, and he was big at his 20w scan (though not as big as DS1 to be fair), but by about 34 weeks I was starting to look on the small side. Oh, and much, much, much easier to deliver DS2 (that'll be the head!)

I hope you have a similar experience!

no, my sister's first dc ws 5kg (no idea what that is in pounds) dc2 was 4.5kg. both born at exactly 41w.

wearenotinkansas · 11/06/2011 08:47

Grownupnow - can I ask you when you had your growth scans - and if you were offered them or did you have to ask? DD1 was 10lb20z - delivered by section. I was huge with DD1 (lots of water as well as huge baby) but if anything am bigger now.

muriel76 · 11/06/2011 08:56

No.

DS1 10lbs 14ozs at 2 weeks late
DS2 9lbs 10ozs at 1 week late

I could tell DS2 was smaller though throughout the pregnancy so wasn't too worried. If I hadn't been so sure I would have demanded a c-section!

nicolamumof3 · 11/06/2011 14:02

yes!
DS1 7lb6oz
DS2 7lb 15oz
DS3 8lb 8oz

now expecting DC4 so we'll see.

LadyWithNoManors · 11/06/2011 14:04

Yes

ds - 7lb 15oz
dd1 - 8lb 2oz
dd2 - 9lb 3oz

notso · 11/06/2011 14:15

Yes for me because I think DS2 would have been bigger than DS1 at same gestation IYSWIM
DD 7lb 1oz born at 40 weeks
DS1 9lb 5.5oz born at 41+2
DS2 9lb 1oz born at 38 weeks

exoticfruits · 11/06/2011 14:17

I think the answer is that some are and some aren't-with no way of predicting!

tootooposh · 11/06/2011 14:23

Anecdotes are not really very helpful. Yes, there is, on average a linear relationship between birth weight and birth order if you look at statistical studies. Of course, this does not mean it is ALWAYS the case as posters above have illustrated, but it is true much more often than not.

Be comforted that there is also, statistically, the comforting fact that DC2 is born with half the number of contractions of DC1. DC3 is half the number of contractions again and from there on it's pretty constant. (Again posters will come on with stories of the opposite, but they will be the exceptions).

You will be fine! Good luck. Um, I hate to mention it but more likely at four months (when baby is still teensy), that your bigger size is more to do with weaker stomach muscles. Ho hum, I sympathise.

LilyBolero · 11/06/2011 14:24

Mine were;
9lb 12
10lb 0
10lb 2
10lb 12

NatzCNL · 12/06/2011 08:07

True with me:
DD1 was 7lb 4oz
DD2 who was born 16 months later was 7lb 13oz
Am now expecting number 3 with a 3.5 year age gap since DD2.
DD1 took 8 hours 5mins from first twinge to delivery, DD2 took 1 hour 48mins from first twinge to delivery....! Getting rather nervous about the speed of DD3 delivery. Had a cut with DD1 and about 6 stitches, a tiny tear with DD2 and 1 stitch.
Best of luck to you x Smile

Hormoneoverload · 12/06/2011 11:03

Three ounces smaller with number two here.

MollysChamber · 12/06/2011 11:13

My second was half a pound bigger than my first but the birth was easy peasy.

ImBrian · 12/06/2011 20:17

1-6lb9
2-7lb5
3-7lb9
So true for mine, pregnant with number 4 and wondering f i might get an 8 lb'er :)

cupofteaplease · 12/06/2011 20:20

Not for me:
dd1- 8.8 1/2 (40+11)
dd2- 8.1 (37+5)

But technically, if dd2 had gone to 40+11 I'm sure she would've been a whopper!

I am pregnant with dd3 who will be a section at 39 weeks so who knows...

Fuzzywood · 12/06/2011 20:23

DD 8lb 7oz, episiotomy so stitches, ouch
DS 8lb 8.5oz, 2 hour labour, no tears.
Bump was probably a little smaller the second time so no indication there.
