any truth in this? That would put me at having an actual Christmas baby! Not a problem but have been dreaming about a family Christmas and it didn't involve being on the labour ward!

I looked into this when I went overdue. I could only find one scientific study. It found that first-time white women go an average of 40w+8d
I'm afraid I can't remember for other ethnic origins/parity.
I guess this length is reflected in the fact that in France your due date is given as 41 weeks of pregnancy.
I went overdue over Christmas. Was due on 16/12 but DD wasn't born til 30/12. I had really thought I would have had my baby by Christmas.

I know the plural of anecdote isn't data, but number one arrived nine days before due date and number two three days after. Thirty eight weeks today with number three so who knows...

ds was due at Christmas and came in mid October

Rootatoot - if you're not comfortable with her staying when you're 37+ weeks, then don't do it. Giving birth is too important a time for you to be stressed about other family members. I can't think of anything worse than labouring in front of my MIL, and she is lovely!

sheeplikessleep · 09/06/2011 13:40

My first was 3 weeks early.
My second was 2 weeks and 6 days early.

bluecheesedip · 09/06/2011 13:47

All three of mine were 10 days to 2 weeks early.

DS1 - went to my midwife appt - she told me I'd definitely be going overdue and they'd need to induce me and the baby would be huge.

Went into labour that night and he wasn't huge Grin

Read a study which basically showed average gestation for a white, middle class, first time mother was 40+8.

If you're not white or are working class, it is shorter I remember. Probably all that time spent toiling in the fields Wink.

Of course stats mean nothing when it comes to your own personal experience. But try not to focus excessively the one EDD, its more of a range 37-42 weeks and anything in that is 'normal'.

girlfromdownsouth · 09/06/2011 13:53

DD - 10 days early
DS - 7 days early
DC3 - due mid July (who knows?)

My sister was exactly 3 days over with her DD and her DS.

harassedinherpants · 09/06/2011 13:56

Ds1 - bang on
ds2 - bang on
dd - 10 days late
dc4.... due Boxing Day, but I have my money on 10 days late again so 5 Jan.

nickelbabe · 09/06/2011 13:58

my big sis was 5 days over, I was 1 day early, my little sis was 1 day early.

big sis's DD was a little bit early, her DS was on time.
little sis's DS1 was 12 weeks early, her DS2 was 6 weeks early and her DS3 was on time, i think.

mine could be anytime it wants!
(although I had a premonition today it would be the 7th Dec, which will make it 10 days over Confused )

gingercat12 · 09/06/2011 14:04

DS1 was 1 day and 4 hours late, but it all kicked off on the due date.

Good luck!

nicolamumof3 · 09/06/2011 18:04

i wouldn't fixate on it too much, they come when they are ready, or induced so not much you can do. I'd love to not go over this time as feel really awful with spd and just generally shattered as dc4. But who knows!
