I just fell over (25 weeks pregnant)!

It was more embarrassing than painful but I fell right to the ground, grazed my knee and sprained my ankle. Was a bit shaken but passers by helped me up and I felt much better after limping home and having something to eat/drink. I don't think bump suffered - should I phone the doctor/midwife or just forget about it?
(moral of the story...slow down, don't carry too much shopping at once and don't take a short cut through the park when it has been raining a lot!)

Oh dear, hope you feel ok now you are at home. Maybe just give your midwife a quick call for ease of mind?

MsChanandlerBong · 08/06/2011 13:57

Oh no you poor thing. I think it is fairly common, due to a change in your centre of gravity, and general pregnancy clumsiness (I am also 25 weeks and am covered in bruises where I keep walking into things!). But it is horribly embarassing when you call over isn't it?

As per mopsy's suggestion, if you don't feel the bump wiggling as normal, perhaps a call to the midwife is a good idea just for peace of mind.

It doesn't sound too dangerous, but it wouldn't hurt to give your midwife a call. Babies can be remarkably resilient - in my first pregnancy I fell down a flight of wooden stairs at 30 weeks (doctor thinks my ischius nerve (sp?) gave way) - had a scan at my gynecologist's and all was OK. In my second pregnancy I was riding a bike with DD1 on the bike seat and skidded across the road on black ice at about 20 weeks - another scan, no problem. Kids are now 13 and 9 and very healthy (if rather accident prone, I don't know if that's hereditary).

So to sum up: I think the danger that your baby has been hurt is very low. There is an extremely low risk - and please don't freak out here - that in a serious fall the placenta will detach, or something like that, but I think it has to be a LOT more of a bump than you've had.

All the best with the rest of the pregnancy.

I fell several times during my pregnancy, the last time at around 33 weeks (am mega clumsy with dodgy ankles). Bump was fine, not so my pride. The one time I hurt my back I rang antenatal and was told to go to A&E. All was fine but it put my mind at rest.

If anything feels off maybe just ring in just in case x

Chr0nic - when I saw the title of your post, I thought it was too coincidental. I, too, am 25 weeks gone and I fell yesterday in the street. Embarrassingly, I slipped on a banana skin - yes, really. Have you ever known of anyone outside of a cartoon to do so? Well I did. Grazes and cuts to my hand, staved fingers and a painful breast bone but no harm to the bump and the little wriggler has been as active as ever. I know exactly how you feel though - I felt awful last night and in a hot sweating panic just in case I had done any harm with my failure to look where I was going.

I fell over at about 25 weeks when I was playing rounders (I know!).

I managed to twist as I fell, so that I didn't land right on my belly, so I hurt my boob and elbow instead. It was more embarrassing than anything, especially when loads of people came over and fussed me.

I'm sure everything is fine. My baby was active as normal and I felt ok, so I didn't get anything checked out. But agree with everyone else -- if anything seems 'off', have it checked immediately, obviously.

Hope you feel better now!

chr0nic · 08/06/2011 14:32

Thanks everyone. I do feel better now (although slightly sorry for all of you, lol)! I had no idea how common it was!!

Hi chr0nic! I fell over 4 weeks ago when I was out running in Portugal, would have been 23 weeks. Managed to twist & fall sideways to land on my right arm and leg so bump didn't touch the ground - the only people that saw were some builders and my friend! We were going uphill and I caught my toe in a loose bit of paving. Couldn't hide the grazes from my husband unfortunately - I think he came back from golf and could literally smell the blood!

I'm sure the midwife won't mind if you call them for piece of mind - it's their job to look after your health and your babies health after all. Hope your ankle heals soon :)

princessdave · 08/06/2011 14:50

Hmm reading that back it should have read "I was 23 weeks", I'm still pg, 27 + 3, bad wording on my part there! :)

Im 24 week and I fell over two days ago outside the busy pub my boyfriend manages, with all the regulars who know me. I fell down hill on my knees, bump then hands.

It was really painful to my bump, and my ego as the dress I was wearing let every one see my knickers! :(

My boyfriend took me to the hospital and we spent 6 hours there, they took my blood pressure, pee sample, and temperature.

The nurse and then doctor examined my bump and I got to hear the babies heart beat for the first time, they said the bump can take a lot and that if I feel any changes just to go back.

Baby is fine, I'm just shaken up and am defiantly taking things slower now, I have bruised knees, bruised bump and hands.

The baby is still kicking away loads and I feel a little less shaken after some proper sleep.

MrsR84 · 19/08/2015 19:29

I did it twice - sat on a patio chair which was too close to the edge, rolled down the garden & into the side of the shed, then stacked it HARD on thd carpet in our living room for absolutely no reason! Both times I managed to land on my side & badly bruise/graze an arm, bump didn't take the impact directly.

Baby is here now and absolutely fine, but I felt SO bad & tearful both times, I didn't seek medical reassurance as I was still feeling kicks & there were no warning signs.

33goingon64 · 19/08/2015 21:21

I fell and twisted my ankle and went into labour a few hours later - but I was 40+13 so well overdue! I'm sure your baby will be fine.

Wolfiefan · 19/08/2015 21:24

Just a reminder that if you are rhesus negative and have a bump you may need anti d.
Fell out the back door and landed on bump once. She's 5 now!

jollyjester · 19/08/2015 21:25

Please go to your local maternity unit and have a quick check. Better safe than sorry.

I fell at 19 weeks and went and they scanned bump to put my mind at ease.

Turns out my badly cut knee was actually broken and I didn't get it it seen too so lots of physio after baby was born!

Magpie78 · 19/08/2015 22:48

Fell at 20 weeks and broke my shoulder....that was fun. He is 15 months now though ????

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/08/2015 22:50

Another one saying contact your midwifery team ASAP if you're rhesus neg.
