reusable wipes - yes or not worth the hassle?

I am trying to be eco conscious :) and although I don't want to use reusable nappies (but will try ECing and early potty training) am thinking of at least using reusable wipes but have a couple of questions for experienced users :)

  1. how long is it OK to soak them - we do the washing every 3 days at home and I really don't want to wash stuff every day
  2. I plan to use separate ones for bum and other (face, baths, wiping food etc) which ones are softer for face and bathing - bamboo or terry cloth?
  3. What products did you use to soak the dirty wipes? Is tea tree oil enough or should I use something like the mothercare nappy soak?

any general comments/advice? :)

I didn't buy fancy reusable wipes, I just use little flannels. I have a pack of disposable baby wipes in the changing bag for ease when out though, and tend to just use the reusables at home.

For the first couple of months we used cotton wool and water (just had a bowl of water on the changing table), now we use wipes and water. Stick them in the nappy bin and they're washed with the nappies. Also use them for washing hands and faces, wiping noses etc too.

Op seems to be getting a bit worked up about poo, which is to be expected I guess if you have encountered baby poo before! New babies poo is very easy to clean up, esp if breast-fed. It is not really offensive. Also if you are EC-ing, poos are usually easier to get in a receptacle rather than wees as it is easier to pick up on baby's signs when they are going to poo & you come to know when they are most likely to do one, eg 10mins after a feed in the early days or when relaxed after a bath.

& when babe is on solids it is even easier as the poo is also more solid so they are more aware they are doing it. We had less than a handful of poos (not literally!) in nappies once DS was 6mths as he much preferred to wait for the opportunity to go in a potty.

idlevice hahaha Freud would have something to say about that no? I'm actually not too worried about it (have worked in a nursery for past 4 yrs so changed my fair share of nappies ;)
I am just obsessing a bit as it's my first baby and well, been cooped up all week sick at home!

I am actually very encouraged about your EC comments! I am hoping that I will be able to do this - are there any threads on MN about ECing with tips and advice?
