My latest one is Yorkshire too, so I have chopped it for me and DD for lunch.

Silkenladder, are you saying that they have confirmed it isn't cucumber that has caused the outbreak?

silkenladder · 31/05/2011 14:35

I think so. They've confirmed that two of the four samples from the cucumbers cannot be responsible, the results from the other two samples are not available yet. However, they are saying that the cucumbers could have made people ill, so it is still important that the cucumbers be investigated.

Spain is apparently looking into how to sue Germany for loss of trade Shock.

Oh dear, from what I have been reading they have never actually said it was those, just suspected but I suppose that is enough sometimes to send people into a panic. And as you say there are traces on there which could still make people ill.

The idea that it came from cucumbers was since the people who were infected had all eaten salad as opposed to a group of people who were not infected. But the definite source of it is still unknown.

I've gone from last week, thoroughly washing and peeling the cucumbers to us now not eating any raw veg. The contamination was possibly from raw sewage in the water used to water the veg so could be in the veg rather than just on the peel.

I'm not an anxious person but this is a serious situation in Germany and i'm going along with government advice till the source is found.

Meanwhile in the UK - carry on with your british grown "cumcumbers"!!

nunnie · 31/05/2011 15:22

Don't blame you in the slightest Canella I would do the same.

nickelbabe · 31/05/2011 15:44

Looking at this news report - it was in Germany and the cucumbers were imported from Spain.

Don't buy spanish cucmbers - if they're not in season in the UK, don't buy them.

It certainly makes you appreciate the value of all the advice we get on what to avoid in pregnancy. We were told at our booking in briefing to thoroughly wash all raw veg, peel if possible and avoid salads abroad. I ignored the avoid salads abroad thing as I thought it was ridiculous to think northern Europe (where I travel) would have more problems than the UK. Which it is, so it could equally easily happen here. I think I'll peel my Yorkshire cucumber!

Canella · 31/05/2011 16:09

Nickelbabe - that was the initial thought but the definite source is still unknown.

Canella · 31/05/2011 16:10

I dont think i made it clear in my earlier post - i live in germany

nickelbabe · 31/05/2011 16:31

sorry, Canella, i didn't see your post when I put mine in.
you should steer clear - but reading your post properly, that's quite a scary situation.
