One ankle more swollen than the other - 37 weeks

I know I shouldn't have googled!
Overnight mu ankles have swelled up for the first time - one more than the other. Googling suggests this could be a DVT, but I have no pain in the leg....

Any opinions? I don't want to ring midwife as she is on holiday so would get a strange one.....

You really do need to get your BP checked today. Ring the labour ward and ask if you can come in for a check up. In the meantime, lie down with your feet up to try and get the swelling down. Fluid retention can be an indicator of pre-eclampsia.

My BP was checked on Thursday and was actually quite low - surely pre-eclampsia doesn't come on that quickly?

Mine did, unfortunately. Not saying that you have it, but it's worth getting symptoms checked out. Could be your body's way of telling you you're overdoing it, but good to get your mind put at rest.

Thanks for that - can I ask what other symptoms you had?

I felt a little unwell, almost fluey but without any snot or sore throat. A common indicator is a bad headache, but I didn't get that.

Now, don't panic, because I'm not saying that you definitely have got it! Just that swelling be an indicator.

I feel well enough - apart from heartburn, tiredness, pregnancy irritability etc!
I'll put my feet up and if it hasn't gone down by tomorrow I'll ring the labour triage ward thingy.... does that sound reasonable?

Well it could be a DVT especially if your calf is hot/red as well as swollen. You really need to see these things. If it was me I wouldn't take the risk and would prefer a medic to look at it just to make sure.

Mabelface · 29/05/2011 16:07

Nah, do it today. Always best to get checked out.

KeepOnSwimming · 29/05/2011 16:10

Gah! I hate bothering them - it always turns out to be nothing and I feel a fool...

I know, I know, I always felt the same. Grin

Do check it out with a professional, but for what it's worth I've had one swollen ankle for weeks, a normal BP and no other problems so it can be 'normal' as well. You won't know if you don't get checked though so don't hesitate to do so!

ada07 · 29/05/2011 16:53

I agree with madlizzy you should do it today.

Also, I think you probably need to go to OOH or A&E rather than see your midwife. A&E here is relatively quiet on a Sunday afternoon?

My mother is mithering me to get it checked as well - my father had multiple DVTs..... I'll wait until DP is back and see if he can take me...

Booboostoo - thanks for that - was starting to panic myself!
