Massage. Can I?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and my Mum has offered to send me to the spa for a few treatments as a treat!
I've never had any treatments before but have always fancied a back/shoulder massage. Could I do this with a baby bump or would it be impossible?!
What would be a good treatment for a pregnant woman to have? I'm definitely getting a manicure and pedicure but can't decide on what else and would be very grateful for some ideas!
Is there anything I should be aware of with oils etc?

Some spas offer special mum to be treatments, so if you can stick to those. Some treatments will definitely be off limits, as will certain oils. Tell them when you book that you are PG and they should tell you what you can have.

Thank you. Have you had any treatments whilst pregnant?

I've had lots of treatments whilst pregnant. Most spas offer specific mum to be massages/treatments. Others don't but will be able to tailor their normal massages to you.

I've had massages during this pregnancy. Just tell them when you book that you're pregnant so they don't use any inappropriate oils, but don't feel you need to book anything specifically for 'mums to be' (always more expensive!)

In terms of the massage itself, depending on the size of the bump you may still be able to lie on your tummy, otherwise they will prop you up with pillows or put you on a special chair.

If it's a spa, be careful of what else is there. You don't want to go in the sauna or jacuzzi for example.

Agree with jenga - book any massage and just make sure you tell them you're pregnant, but pregnancy massages are just a marketing ploy so that they can charge you more. Enjoy :)

I had a mum to be full body massage (same price as normal one) and french facial at 24 weeks pg. The massage wasn't that good compared to a normal one because I couldn't lie on my front. They had me lie on my side but consequently it wasn't as deep a massage. French facial was FANTASTIC! I was nearly asleep.

I think a seated neck and shoulders massage would be nice. Also consider a facial, pedicure etc. The spa should be able to advise what else you could have.

I'm a qualified massage therapist, but it's not my job at the moment.

As you're past 12 weeks you can have a massage, it's just some of the essential oils that they use that can't be used. Just make sure that your therapist knows!

Thank you. Will give them a ring and see what they suggest!

renaissance227 whereabouts in the country are you? I quite fancy something like this myself :)

Please bear in mind, that some spas have policy of no treatment for pregnant women. This happen to me lately when girls took me for my very late hen-do ( now we can call it mamma-do). As the tickets were bought before my wedding and before I was pregnant, we had no idea that they had that in place... So instead of massage and other treats I ended up with a manicure and pedicure :D
