Scan at 16 weeks shows "Fluid around neck head and body, and in abdomen"?????

My friend, aged 40 has had a dating scan, she is 16 weeks (didn't know she was pregnant )

The radiographer has referred her to the consultant because there was fluid surrounding the neck, head and torso, and also in the abdomen. The amniotic fluid is reduced.

My poor friend has to wait until 4pm tomorrow to see the consultant.
She asked if I would ask on here. Obviously she is aware that it is likely to be bad news.

Has anyone had any similar expereinces of this (good or bad ) ???

No experience of this myself I'm afraid - try posting in Antenatal tests/choices as well, you might get some more informed advice.

Good luck to your friend, hope it all works out for her.

I found a couple of threads which might be relevant? Please don't show to your friend, mixed good and bad news on these ones. I found them by searching the Antenatal tests section with the terms "head" and "fluid", there are others too.

i had a down's syndrome pregnancy last year. the fluid around the neck was increased and extended further down her back. it is something normally associated with chromosomally abnormal babies unfortunately. i expect your friend will probably be advised to have an invasive test to take a sample of the baby's DNA to diagnose any genetic abnormalities. im sorry she has to go through this, its a terrible thing x

This happened to my second son and there was fluid build up all over his body. It was first noticed at the 12 week scan and progressively got worse. He had sever hydrops (fluid) caused by genetic abnomalities. The end result was terminal for our son but I really hope for a better outcome for your friend. If she is able then a CVS should be done to determine the root cause although in our case this still didn't diagnose the issue, only a post mortem gave us conclusive information. Very sorry she is going through this x

Thanks for all your thoughtful and helpful replies. Will find out more tomorrow at 4pm. From what I have read today it doesn't look good. Just got to hope.
