So having never had reflux or heart burn before it is now kicking in (18weeks) big time. I was in serious pain yesterday and vomiting in the night barely able to catch my breath. I can now see how people have confused heart burn with a heart attack!

Anyway does anyone have any tips, I don't eat big meals and it so far doesn't seem triggered by particular food. I know I might sound like a wimp (and that if I can't cope with this pain I'm going to struggle with the main even in 5 months) but I promise I'm not normally one to complain about pain.

I suffer from this all the time (not just when pregnant). The answer is Omeprazole. As I am on it all the time I have asked numerous doctors about its safety including 2 gps, an obstetrician and a gastroenterologist and all are convinced its completely safe. I am assuming you have tried Gaviscon and it makes it worse rather than better?

reallygrumpy · 23/05/2011 10:54

I've had bad heartburn in both my pregnancies (currently 30+2) and the only things I've found that work are eating little and often and Gaviscon which you can take when pg.

I have this too, Dr's have been great, one prescribed Omeprazole and as brettgirl says it's brilliant, however the obs consultant said she wasn't so sure about it so changed me to Ranitidine and I took one 150mg a day, then I found it wasn't getting me through past dinner so she upped it to 2 a day, now it is much better. Not the instant relief omeprazole gave, but I know I couldn't manage without it.
Please speak to your doctor, I know it's not fun when you are contantly acidy and vomitting and having chest pain - I'm 27+1 and I've had it most of way through. If you are only 18 weeks now I would get help now rather than suffering.

I'm getting it badly too...it's horrible :( I find that I get it from eating some foods (bananas - really!) and also from not eating for a long time too. One week all I could eat was bread and cheese and nothing else. Talk to your MW about it, I find mine is controlled by drinking gaviscon out of the bottle taking gaviscon regularly, which you can get by the massive bottle on prescription for free.

AgBag · 23/05/2011 11:45

I'd also recommend Gaviscon, your doctor can prescribe the double strength formula. I'm also told that drinking milk can help... I personally cant stand it, but I've found eating a creamy icecream can help a bit... Hope you start to feel better soon.

sleep propped up, a glass of water with a teaspoon of bicarb and the burp that follows is bliss, and strangely a milky decaff coffee helped too. i live on rennies/gaviscon during the day.

grottielottie · 23/05/2011 13:25

Thanks for the advise, the gaviscon only really touches it when it's at it's mildest. Have booked a doc appointment so will try and get hold of the good stuff you recommended.

Peptac is my friend. Even though it makes me heave when I take it Sad

I find the same Joanne - worse if I eat lots or late, but also when I don't eat, and bananas? Let's not go there...

I find drinking lots of milk helps. If I ever get osteoporosis I shall want to knwo how!

a11yJ · 23/05/2011 18:50

ParisPreMom · 23/05/2011 19:25

Hello,
I suffered from this too around week 20. Felt like someone had cut up the inside of my throat with a knife.
Tried Gaviscon, didn't work. Tried papaya enzyme, didn't work. Asked a Canadian friend to bring me some TUMS - worked like absolute magic. If you can get them in the UK, get some! They're safe to take while pregnant (label tells you how many you can take as a pregnant woman).
Good luck!

WinterLover · 23/05/2011 19:37

Ive just been perscribed Ranitidine one tablet twice a day. Will be starting them tonight. Hopefully your GP will help you... I just wish id gone sooner to see him now!

You can get TUMS from superdrug and boots Grin
