Had a private gender scan yesterday....

Hi all,

I am 16 weeks exactly today. My husband & I paid for a private gender scan yesterday (15 + 6) and we were told it's a boy. I have a 14 month old DD and we only opted for this gender scan as my husband will be away for the 20 week scan and he missed the 20 week scan with my DD so we both wanted him to experience being told the gender.

Has anyone had any experience of having a gender scan so early? Are they fairly accurate? I was pretty certain I was carrying another little girl, so I am in a bit of a shock. I am not wishing things to be different, but I am curious to see if I can trust the results. I know no scan is ever 100% accurate, but I have a niggling voice in the back of my head telling me that it was still too early to tell for sure.

Any ideas?

Did you mention to your sonographer that you thought you saw three lines as well? When we saw our boy on our 20 week scan, there really was no room for confusion...

I also know what you mean about really wanting a particular gender child... But I wonder how much of my thinking is influenced by never having really grown up around boys. I'd love a girl, but if I don't get one on child two (or three?!) then I've got plenty of lovely nieces.

cantthink - no need to feel sorry for me and my 3 wonderful healthy boys, they are all so "different and so fun together" to. Hmm I actually find the idea that people still think you need 1 of each sex to have the "perfect family" and in some way people that dont have 1 of each should be pitied - as you seem to.

dana - you will be fine, when he is here these feelings will seem a distant memory, any child is a blessing and an addition to your own wee family unit.

should read "I actually find the idea that people still think you need 1 of each sex to have the "perfect family" to be quite offensive

I agree actually duck and I don't normally take offence! I had 2 girls then #3 was a boy and everyone assumed that we were having #3 to get a boy. When we announced #4 there were a lot of 'but why - you already have a mix?' comments! All v odd. So now we've managed to 'achieve' the perfect mix Hmm we'll stop at 4!

I honestly believe I'd have been just as happy with 4 of one or other sex. After all, they're all my babies and I love them dearly!

I had a scan at 16 weeks with DC4. It was my dating scan but it was late because they had booked me in for nuchal despite be telling them I didnt want one. So they had to cancel that and squeeze me in for a 'normal' one Hmm

The sonographer told me the sex. It was clear. She could tell. She was right.

Nothing is 100% but surely they wouldnt offer a private gender scan at 16 weeks if they couldnt tell to a fairly accurate degree?

I don't think its achieving the perfect family. I couldnt give a rats arse about what other people think about my family but to me a little girl and a little boy would have such different experiences and I guess they have different relationships to the parents too. I grew up with 2 brothers and 2 sisters so we have a good mix and I kind of got to know and understand the opposite sex through my brothers, if, I had grown up in an all female house though maybe I would feel a little scared of the unknown.

Hi all,

I genuinely appreciate all of the comments and I am not upset or offended at anything anyone has said. You are all so right, I should be counting my lucky stars, not being a silly mare. I am trying very hard to get a grip of myself!!

I just wanted to clarify to thefirstMrsDeVere that the hospital didn't offer the scan, we went to a studio where we live that does scans (3D or 4D, not sure which one is correct). They offer sexing scans at 16 weeks but those are in 2D. I have my next scan at 20 weeks with the NHS at the end of June.

Thats what I thought - that it was a private scan so they would have to be pretty sure they could tell at 16 weeks or they wouldnt offer the service?

But I expect they dont tell you its 100% accurate.

Your NHS might tell you again at your 20 week scan. Lots do.

Whatever happens, you will be ok - honestly.
