Rolling on my back during the night

I'm 25wks pregnant with DC2 and in the last few nights I've woken up either during the night or in the morning sleeping on my back. Cue an awful back pain that barely lets me move for a while.

I always sleep on my right side as for some reason the baby doesn't like the left one Grin but I'm worried about rolling on my back at night because it's said to prevent good blood flow to the baby, etc. When I wake up I don't know whether I've been on my back for minutes or hours.

Has anyone experienced this? Is it something I need to worry about or is it just normal? You'd think I'd remember from last time, but no Grin

I'm 28 weeks and wake up every morning on my back! I start with good intentions! I had a friend who sleep on her back the whole pregnancy. My baby is still extremely active so don't think it's doing any damage? But I like you, have no control over it! My husband goes ape at me in the morning! I think it's more towards the end hen your a lot bigger and heavier, but not entirely sure! Will be watching to find out answers too x x

Oh same here, DH gets home late after work and rolls me on my side, bless him. My main concern, as you say, is whether I'm going to harm the baby. Back pain is hell, but nothing paracetamol can't relieve at the moment Smile

i had awful back pain between about wk 26-34. If i slept on my side my back just went into spasm on the uppermost side. so just had to go onto my back often to get any sleep at all. DS is just fine!

nannyl · 21/05/2011 08:44

I asked my midwife this on Friday last week. (Im 24 weeks)

she replied that the entire human race has survived, and only relatively recently has it been advised to sleep on back.... IF being on back was hurting me (it doesnt effect baby, just me) than the discomfort would wake me up & make me move and not to worry or stress about it.

I have bought a dream genii pillow which is good at mostly keeping me on my side, or at least not completley on back.... but i still often wake up BETWEEN the to 2 pillow bits, on my back anyway!

Sleeping on your back wont harm you or the baby unless like you have said it effects your back.

Im 32 weeks now and sleep quite a bit on my back as i have pgp that is worse when i sleep on my side.

Gauchitaconpanza · 21/05/2011 08:56

Magnumwhite, Nannyl, oh that's good to know, then.

The same happens to me with the pregnancy pillow, I wake up on my back anyway.

Thanks for all your replies! Off to take some paracetamol for this lovely back pain...

I asked my midwife this too (am 22 weeks) and she said while it's not ideal, it's not something to worry about too much either and that if baby gets agitated because of it they will probably move around enough to wake you up.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 21/05/2011 10:41

Agree with nannyl. I'm 35 wks and still sleep on my back with no probs.

soundofherwings · 21/05/2011 11:29

If sleeping on your back is causing a problem, you'll wake up anyway. It's because the baby can compress your vena cava, the big vein that goes back up to your heart, but you'd notice it before it affected the baby.
I haven't been able to lie on my back since about 16 weeks, my heart starts pounding and I feel all odd and dizzy, it's horrible. If you feel fine on your back I can't see why it would be a problem.

Gauchitaconpanza · 21/05/2011 11:39

Glad to hear the consensus is there's nothing to worry about.

Soundofherwings, sorry to hear it's affected you so badly. How many weeks are you now?

Same gestation, same problem. I have PGP so sleeping on my side is not comfy. I figure if I wasn't supposed to sleep on my back, I wouldn't do it. I can't help it at all.

firstsupermum · 21/05/2011 12:11

iam 32weeks and like to sleep on my back, it ok for me but just what people are saying about it that worry me, but i realy like to sleep on my back.

soundofherwings · 21/05/2011 13:53

I'm 21 weeks now, but it doesn't bother me too much as I'm a side sleeper anyway. I shove a pillow up against my back in bed so if I roll over I'm still half on my side.

Mumswang · 21/05/2011 14:09

You're not meant to sleep on your back??? I didn't know that. Am 34 weeks with my 2nd

Also only found out about not having hot baths next week

Might get a book or somthing

Mumswang · 21/05/2011 14:10

Duh last week

Perhaps sleeping on my back has brained my damage

StellaSays · 21/05/2011 15:28

:o at Mumswang

Gauchitaconpanza · 21/05/2011 15:42

Soundofherwings, glad to hear it's not bothering you too much then. I'll try putting another pillow behind my back to see if it helps to reduce the consequent back pain. I have SPD as well so sleep is already not comfortable, if I can do anything to ease it, I'll try it!

Mumswang, Grin
