Gestational diabetes - high fasting sugar level this morning - who to call on a Saturday?

Sorry, I am having a bit of a panic :( Fasting level was 8.2 this morning - normal range is 4-5.6. Obviously the diabetes clinic is closed at weekends, so who do I call? Out of hours doctor? Community midwives? Do I go to A&E? If anyone has advice or experience, it would be most welcome to stop me freaking out.

Does your local hospital not have maternity triage? I mean who would you phone if going into labour in the middle of the night? The community midwives may not be there but their answer machine may have an emergency number on it? But failing that I would go to A&E.

Sorry I should say I don't have experience of diabetes but I had lots of bleeds during pregnancy mainly at night and I just used to phone triage at the maternity unit and they would always tell me to come in to get checked out. Don't panic, deep breaths.

Thanks Besom :) I think I will phone them.

Normal diabetes, without insulin injections or pills, if your level reaches 17 for more than 3 days you need to speak to a doctor, I dont know if it is the same for gestational diabetes, can you look on diabetes u.k or phone them, :)

Besom · 21/05/2011 07:49

Take care. Hope you're ok. Sure you will be.

Best not to take any chances when pregnant I think. If you speak to a midwife they'll have plenty of experience of this and will soon tell you if you need to be seen.

Hi I have had gestational diabetes twice and diet controlled.

If you are diet controlled (don't know anything about insulin) but I had random ones that would go up to 8 but the nurse said asking as they are not all going up constantly one every now again is fine. If it is just a one off I would of just waited till Monday but if you need advice maybe call midwife

Did you wash your hands properly? I had a few abnormal readings that were tainted by soap. Don't panic, just give the maternity unit a call and see what they say.

I ended up on insulin when I had GD. I wasn't so bad, I promise.

Thanks everyone, I feel a bit reassured. Rang the labour ward and spoke to a lovely midwife who said to come in and checked over, so will be going in a bit.

TheMitfordsMaid thanks especially for that. My last pregnancy was completely trouble-free and for some reason having GD and it now being a bit uncontrolled has made me feel like a complete failure. I've never been so careful with my diet and it still doesn't seem to be making any difference...didn't expect to take it so personally Blush

star let us know what they say when you go in, my levels have for some reason been higher on the fasting ones than on the eating ones a lot of the time?! but i didn't think to call them about it, midwife just told me to track the levels and ill be going back in on mon for an apt so was thinking if it was one of those things that you need to let them know straight away she would have said... i hope i havent done wrong thing by just writing it down in the book and not letting them know, but would be good to hear what midwifes say when you talk to them

notthewowy · 21/05/2011 10:04

dont panic. I've been through this twice. the odd high reading isn't too dangerous. First time I was diet controlled and the second Insulin controlled. I have to tell you that scary as it was the insulin was far better for me, easier to control and the baby was much less huge too. Anyway, at worst if your fasting readings are high they may give you some slow acting insulin for overnight. As pp say it's not a reason to panic and it can probably wait till Monday but if you are at all concerned do you have the number for your local pregnancy assessment unit?

I hope things go well at the hospital. (which I am sure it will)

I have GD and had a panic not long after I was diagnosed with a reading of over 10mmol post meal. I have since got used to the fact that no matter what I eat or what insulin I take (I was unable to diet control) my readings would sometimes go crazy and be over or quite high and it was out of my control. I suspect it is down to hormones. Being tired/stressed can affect your readings too.

Thanks so much everyone, this really helped yesterday :) I went in for monitoring in the end just to be on the safe side, and everyone was lovely. Actually had quite an interesting chat with the mws there about whether I do in fact have GD - my GTT result was right on the borderline so the community mw had written in my notes that I didn't have it, but the hospital have decided that I do. Apparently my trust has a policy of erring on the cautious side with this, so the mw I saw said that when I see the specialist mw on Tuesday she might decide to monitor my readings and what I eat for a couple of weeks to work out whether I have GD or if it's just that certain foods make my blood sugar spike.

Baby is fine and funnily enough my readings yesterday and today have been well within normal limits, despite a lot of carbs and a verboten piece of chocolate brownie this morning. So I'll be very interested to see what the specialist mw says!

Firawla they also reassured me that the odd high reading isn't a cause for panic in itself - I am just the anxious type and wanted some immediate answers since I didn't know what the risk timescale was Grin Am a bit annoyed with the diabetes nurse who wanted me to go in on Friday and start Metformin based on two borderline high results though.
