Please help me. I'm 14 weeks pg and having had morning sickness since week 5, I expected it to start to clear up about now. It's getting worse!!!
Now for the TMI bit. I think the main cause is the ammount of excess mucus my nose is producing which collects in my stomach and literally cause my breakfast (and this week lunch) to bounce every day!(SORRY!)

Any tips to get rid of the mucus. I drink loads of water to increase hydration, suck mints.Have even tried drinking a cup of tea really fast in the morning to get myself vomiting in an attempt to "clear" it. I'm sure I've got people gagging reading this.

I am really at my wits end. I've actually been feeling hungry this week beause of the ammount of food I haven't kept down.

This is pg3 and I've never had anything like this before.

Poor you! I know exactly how you feel, although mine goes down the back of my throat and I have to spit it out! It gets worse when I eat and I'm going through six roles of toilet tissue a day!! I have to keep alternating the shops I'm buying it from! This is my third pregnancy and unfortunately I had this with all three from start to finish with all. The moment I give birth, it stops like a switch! I also suffered from hypremisis in until twenty weeks which was definitely worsened due to this as it contains too much progestrion and it can stop you from digesting your food properly! (I have done a lot of research, this is hell!!) mine does slow down at around 20 weeks as the hormone levels slow down a little, and you can tell when I have a hormone burst as my nasal drip gets worse!
But, I have tried everything to get rid of it! Netti pot, sinus rinses and nasal sprays, steroid sprays which to be honest made it worse as the drip never disappeared, it just made it taste even more aweful than it did!! I even tried acupunture and reflexology and nothing! Because it's all hormone based! It will ease off I promise you, but may not stop altogether until you have given birth! I also used to get cop us amounts of saliva in my mouth and used to sit there with a cup to catch it as it was too much to swallow and I'd fill it in about an hour!
What I will say though if you are spitting it out, which is definitely best to do so, is make sure you keep yourself hydrated as mine used to get worse the more dehydrated I got!
This condition truly is miserable and I do feel for you! Good luck and I promise you, it will ease off!!! X x

Thank you for the replies. I'm suspecting milk (and to a less extent other dairy) is making it worse, but not causing it. So black tea in the mornings and toast instead of cereal.(which now means I'm pondering on taking calcium suppliments. What a faff!)

I'm currently attempting to ease the symptoms with aniseed balls and clove rock sweets. What I really need is a good suck on a cattarah pastille, but they're all full of things like creosote so prob not pg friendly!!!

I know that all this will be a distant memory in a few months time (and well worth it) but I'm coughing/retching so violently I bought some Tena lady Blush this week to wear in the mornings. Must do my pelvic floor exercises!!

Tell me about it! I was that sick at the beginning I suffered a prolapse! And now have absolutely no pelvic muscles whatsoever, I wet myself every time I'm sick! The worst part is, is that because I have grade 4 placenta previa, I can't do the exercises to stop that! I'm going to be a right mess by the time I've finished! Definitely no more children after this one! But yes, make sure you do them, you don't understand how important they are to do them!! Good luck with the non dairy thing, but remember if it doesn't work to start eating dairy again, I tried it and it no effects on me whatsoever. I have seen specialists with it and they said that it's just because of the hormones your body thinks it has an allergy and makes your sinuses swell and produce excessive amounts of mucus. I still promise you, it'll ease by 20 weeks but may not still go away till you give birth! But it's still worth trying the prescription nasal sprays, they may work for you! X

I had a bleeding nose a lot when I was pregnant and mentioned it to the doctor who prescribed an antibiotic nasal cream which really helped and cleared it up - worth mentioning at your next check up? He said it's because our blood vessels swell up because of the extra blood in our systems, which can make you feel blocked etc and sometimes it can get a bit infected too.

Oh Coppernoodle. I feel a bit of a fraud whinging now!

I really hope I've not got an intolerance to dairy at moment. I've always lived on cheese! I'm not going to avoid it completely but it def makes nose stuffy and vomiting more mucusy in the morning.(Sorry soooo gross!) I'm not a fan of self diagnosed allergy/ intolerance.

I'm going to just keep moving the goalposts with regards to feeling "better". I was thinking by week 13 I'd be feeling ok and not vomiting. Then 14. Now I'll work on hoping to be better by week 20!! I may stumble on something that gives me relief by then!!!

(Must remember this is worth it!!)

Thanks for the link pregnantmimi. I've just looked at it. The list of self help stuff is good because I'm doing ALL of them! It reassures me that I'm doing all I can.
I am going to see my gp/midwife if it carries on at this level or continues to make me "lose" my lunch. I'm trying to avoid using steroid nasal sprays but if I have to balance getting some nutrients into my body with taking a small ammount of medication I'll do .

The only thing I found helped was to keep taking my hayfever tablets. If I missed taking it at bedtime nothing would stay down for 24hours.

I must stress though that I was taking these AGAINST the doctors advice and that if you can find something else to help than it is probably better. My sickness has settled now and so I have stopped taking the tablets at 15weeks.

thegingerone · 22/05/2011 21:35

Thank you. I will have to weigh up the risks v no food staying down.

I had the mucus/vomit thing too. Have you tried saline nasal spray or a neti pot to clear out the gunk?

thegingerone · 26/05/2011 16:56

Yep. I'm using sterimar.(sp?) But (whispers) I haven't vomited for three days.....fingers crossed! Wink. The snot is now just in my nose, which I can deal with. Yipee for the time being.

Woo hoo! Fingers crossed for you.

eurochick · 26/05/2011 22:40

Dairy will make snottiness worse in anyone. TMI ALERT Since I became dairy intolerant a few years ago, I don't get any green or white snot when I have a cold, just runny clear snot. It's a very noticeable difference.
