Why is it wrong to wear underwired bras?

Sorry to sound so ignorant, but why is it wrong to wear underwired bras when your pregnant. I have been doing so for the last seven months and have just been to M&S to buy a new bra and the assitant was really nasty to me saying that my midwife must know nothing. I did check with my mw and she said as long as my bra fitted me well and didn't pinch my skin, that I would be alright. Might I have done some damage? I am sick of people chatting about my boobs as if they didn't belong to me. Got grief from my active birth class last night too as I've decided (with much consideration) not to bf. I came away feeling like I was going to be a bad mother and felt totally judged. Anyone else have any similar experiences?

You canbuy a lot of stuff which isn't good for you.
Read what piffle has to say. Made me think twice!

here

And I think the point is not the underwiring but how they fit.

piffle · 11/11/2005 17:46

Ahhh didn't see the not bf bit sorry shiny
IF you are fitted properly then you'r ok, but after the birth your milk will come in anyway and just make sure you have some nice comfy ones ready for that when it comes maybe?

moondog forgot to mention I had/have really huge honkers though, no bras would really fit well back in that decade in lil old NZ, so I made do, I think if I had been able to afford a decent bra I would have got properly fitted.

Yes,good bra is a major expense...

I wear underwire bras when out and about and non wired ones in the house etc

Think this is a good compromise still have some lift for out and about but don't have them on all the time.

M&X refused to sell me an underwired bra too! The assistant refused to even measure me unless I bought a maternity bra, she was really aggresive with me and treated me like a really bad person for wanted an underwired bra whilst pregnant. She said it was store policy not sell or measure for underwired bras if people were pregnant. I finally got measured by going back the next day and not telling them!

I cannot believe a shop would not sell a pregnant woman an underwired bra!!! Is there a law against it like no alcohol under 18? What if you just look fat and not pregnant?

angelsfield · 12/11/2005 12:41

It really upset and annoyed me at the time! I tried to explain that as an adult I understood the risks but that as far as I was aware as long as the bra didn't dig into breast tissue then there shouldn't be a problem. She still refused and asked me to leave the fitting room and said she couldn't help me unless I agreed to get one of their maternity bras!

frannyandzooey · 12/11/2005 12:52

The only thing I would add, is that while it seems obvious it would be ok, to wear underwire as long as the bra fits properly, I am not sure this is possible in the early days of breastfeeding as your breasts go up and down in size so dramatically. You could have a bra fitted perfectly in the morning and then be several sizes larger / smaller by lunchtime!

Personally I suffered from blocked ducts a lot and it is no fun. I waited to wear underwire till ds was a lot older and no longer feeding much (although by golly did I need it by then).

angelsfield · 12/11/2005 13:33

I completely agree with you, franny&zooey. I was just talking about whilst pregnant, rather than whilst breastfeeding.

Nightynight · 12/11/2005 13:39

goodness, I never heard about the underwired thing before! wore them through 4 pregnancies. agree, a shop refusing to sell you something is infuriating. they should at least warn at the door: "No cigarettes or tobacco sold to under16s. No glue or solvent products sold to under 16s. No underwired bras, prawns, Parma ham, eggs, cat litter or liver sold to pregnant women"

Pregnancy does seem to infantalise women in some people's eyes. Refusing to sell you a bra indeed! Appalling.

I was fitted at M + S while pregnant and they found me a bra which seemed fine, but got very uncomfortable while wearing it, as yours did Norm. However when I went back they could not have been more helpful - found me another style which fitted wonderfully, and exchanged it at no extra charge even though the second one was more expensive. I did notice it was the Senior Corsetier who served me the second time, and should have learnt to ask for her in future. I went for another fitting last week and they have got it wrong again, grumble grumble...
