Bottle feeding new baby

Hi, I have a friend in Germany who had to bottle feed her newborn due to various factors. Anyway she was given an injection in hospital to stop the production of milk - does this happen in the UK too?

No, you just have to wait it out with melon boobs :)

how long does it take for the melon boob stage to pass? is there a fixed time or is it the same for everyone?

Usually from approx days 3-8 ish, not the same for all but thats a rough guide. HTH

they did used to give Epsom salts to stop the milk, dont know why or whether it worked! But now as the others said, you just wait it out.

I have had surgery so cant BF but I have 2 pockets of milk ducts that got left behind after surgery (one in each boob) that are unconnected to my (admittedly useless and there for aesthetic reasons only) nipples so I have to wait for the milk that is produced there to be reabsorbed by my body and that takes up to 2 weeks and FUCKING HURTS!!!! I cant say if thats the same for "normal" boobs, but I would recommend warm cloths on the sore areas, and if you really dont want any supply then dont be tempted to express a bit of milk off to relieve the pressure as that will actually stimulate more milk.

ivykaty44 · 18/05/2011 20:39

It takes longer if you have started to breast feed, if you don't feed at all then the time for melon boobs to go is shorter, you will still produce milk though for 2-3 weeks afterwards and so have to buy pads to absorb the milk

TotorosOcarina · 18/05/2011 20:40

ive just stopped BFing my week old baby and my boobs are really sore and itchy :( i was tempted to express or even try feeding him again to relieve some milk, but in the long run its counter productive as it will just cause more milk to be made.

You just have to ride it out!

wigglesrock · 18/05/2011 20:48

Nope, don't touch them when they get tender and heavy, don't point the shower at them, keep bra on and keep taking the paracetamol Grin Mine took about a week to get past melon boob stage but that was with my third, I think it took longer with my first.

apple99 · 18/05/2011 20:56

It took a couple of weeks for me, lot's of leaking so pads essential. Boobs were enormous!!

otchayaniye · 18/05/2011 21:08

I had my daughter in Singapore and at the first week's paed clinic there were lots of women queuing up to have the injection to stop lactation.

NerfHerder · 18/05/2011 21:09

I found mint tea cut down my milk production.
(fennel tea increases milk supply, so avoid!)

theborrower · 18/05/2011 21:18

Oinkyoink - you may not even get melon boobs - I didn't happen to me and I didn't feel my milk come in, despite me trying to BFat the time (was hand expressing at this stage). So it's not inevitable...

oinkyoink · 19/05/2011 12:44

Ok good to know.... thanks for the opinions/replies!!

Oinky you may not even get melon boobs if you do bf, its not inevitable and I didn't get them. In fact have bf both of mine and my boobs still look good (or so DH says anyway).
