Am I the only one who feels this way?

So the pregnancy test showed positive a few days ago. Went to the doctor who said 'congratulations' and told me to take folic acid.

Now the shock has worn off, I'm wondering what I'm meant to be doing with myself. I don't 'feel' pregnant, if you see what I mean (other than the symptoms)... can i just take my vitamins and ignore it for another six months or so?

Have you got a booking in appointment with a midwife?

Ahzrei · 16/05/2011 16:43

Yep, got one of those next week.

I'm normally quite laid back anyway. I suppose that, as it's such a big, lifechanging thing, I feel like I ought to be doing something useful.

I was a bit like that- it didn't really sink in until I had a proper bump that people noticed! I also remember being very disappointed at the length of the gaps between midwife appointments- think i wanted there to be more excitement! It gets more fun when the ante natal classes start and you go looking for prams and cots etc.

FluffyDonkey · 16/05/2011 17:17

I expected to be a lot more excited than I was - at first. I got my BPF did a lot of jumping around and then thought "now what?"

2 weeks later I started throwing up 5 times a day Grin . That took a lot of the joy out of being pregnant!

I also felt at first that 9 months is incredibly long (still do) and that I didn't quite know what to do. Plus there was still a high risk of miscarriage so I didn't want to get too excited too early.

However, you do need to see a dr fairly early, if only so they give you a list of all the appointments etc. You can't really ignore it for 6 months! Grin

But you'll see, it'll gradually sink in. I did think I'd be more excited earlier, buying clothes etc. but now I'm 20 weeks and we haven't bought anything yet. I think I'll be more excited when the baby moves more (just having flutters atm) or when I go on maternity leave as it'll all be closer.

Is your doctor busy referring you to a hospital? That's the next stage...

Ahzrei · 16/05/2011 20:35

Yes exactly! Nine months is ages! I want to be excited and then for something to happen, but it won't until next year.

Ah well, I'll just have to look forward to my (very spaced out) appointments in the meantime - and hope it all goes well. At least I have an awfully long time to come up with some good names.

Don't worry, i have seen the doctor and made the midwife appointments - just thought there would be more to 'do'. :D

I think the excitment really kicks in after the scan, once you've seen the little baby, and can start telling all your friends and family!

pregnantmimi · 16/05/2011 23:45

its true after you have the scan it feels "real" it was after then I started to get this strange warm lovly feeling of something growing inside me before that it hadnt quite sunk inxxx

kri5ty · 17/05/2011 07:34

Hi I'm 10 weeks tomorrow and I felt exactly the same! I didn't know what to expect or what to do next. I had problems at 1st so was at the hospital every 2 days and because of that my doctor didn't refer me and I didn't know what happened with regards to antenatal or anything... I had a early scan at 8 weeks, and seeing the heartbeat made it real... now when I don't 'feel' pregnant I think of that.

Congrats!!

I'm 5 months pregnant with dc2 and 9 months isn't a long time at all. Although I suppose viewed in terms of just the pregnancy it seems that way. I do remember when pregnant with dd I spent days and weeks thinking 'well what next, 9 months is a lifetime away'. This time round I forget I'm pregnant entirely and it's flying by. In an evening ds will start doing backflips and kicking my bladder and I look down thinking wtf? before realising I have a bump, am pregnant and it's all flying towards the due date rather too quickly.

ninipops · 17/05/2011 10:34

29 weeks with DC2 here and at the mo I am more consumed with the day to day symptoms (getting slower, finding it harder to turn over in bed, not being able to pick stuff up off the floor!) Every so often I will see a baby and think 'oh shit - I'm going to have one of those soon' and then forget about it all again. We have all the baby stuff from DC1 so no real shopping excitement needed and I don't think I could muster the energy even if it was! DD is only 15mths and I am still working and I am hanging on for my mat leave to start so I can get some 'me time'.

On the flip side though I'd quite happily have the baby today cause this pg seems to be going on forever.
