Not putting on weight while pregnant

I'm 24 weeks pregnant on DC2. I was quite overweight when I conceived (85kg). On my last pregnancy the obs was a little concerned about the amount of weight I'd put on. I think that at about 28 weeks she told me not to put on any more weight, and then stopped weighing me at appointments! So while she was a bit concerned, I don't think she was too worried. There was no question of GD or anything. DD arrived early (36+4) and was 7lbs 13.

So, this time around I was a little concerned that I didn't put on too much weight - partly for the simple reason of having to get around during a hot summer with too much weight on, and also for health reasons - me & baby.

I have eaten normally - if a little more healthily. I had some nausea but not too much. I was very ill with a gastric bug that lasted about a week and I lost 3kg in that time, but put it all back on the following week! And now I seem to be in the opposite situation as the last time. I'm still the same weight as when I conceived (actually, possibly about 0.5kg lighter). My bump is growing nicely, and my 22week scan went perfectly, so baby seems to be ok.

I never thought it would ever worry me that I wasn't putting on weight! I kind of thought by now that I might have put on a little bit of weight.

Or am I over thinking all of this....

If you were a bit overweight to start off and are eating well, I definitely wouldn't worry, especially since your scan is fine. Maybe if you wrote down what you ate for a few days and looked at it against some recommended preg diets it would reassure you a bit! If you were starving yourself it would be different but it doesn't sound like that is happening at all.

My BMI had gone just over 25 at the start of my PG, and I haven't gained anything yet at 14-15 weeks, and have eaten loads - but I reckon just being chubby for me at the start (I am normally more like BMI 22) has meant that there has been no need. Even if I put on quite a low average by the end I am sure there will be ample fat supplies on me to feed a baby and if that's true for you too, why worry? xx

Good luck!

I'm in the same situation - high bmi and not put any weight on, (18 weeks), I have put weight on on the past from my evening red wine addiction and I am convinced that by having cut this out I have naturally lost some weight which I think is being balanced by slow increases in baby weight therefore explaining the early weight loss and staying at the same weight for weeks. I know I am not depriving myself food and NOT dieting!! I am not worried!!!

I got pg with DD1 weighing 15st (I'm 5'2), ended the pregnancy weighing 13st7.

Same weight when I got pg with DD2, lost another stone.

Now pg with DD3 and haven't put any on yet.

I seem to lose my food issues when I'm pregnant, so I eat sensibly and very healthily and end up losing weight...totally not by design though!

With DS1 I started my pregnancy with a healthy BMI and piled on the weight, this time round I conceived quite overweight and at 16 weeks weigh 2lb more than when I conceved Confused. I am struggling to eat this time round. The midwife said as long as I'm not dieting not to worry, I assume within reason!

I can't do kilos but with DD I was very overweight. I put on about 18lbs and lost about 24lbs the day she was born. It always seems to me that the women that put on the 5 stones are always about 7 stone to start with. I see myself as coming ready prepared :o

Good to know I'm not on my own with this one. I'm certainly eating well - probably a bit more healthily than normal, but I'm definitely not coming close to dieting. Maybe it's just that I don't have a chocolate vending machine in my office building this time around!

Gwendoline maybe you are right, maybe it's about already being prepared.Grin

Interestingly, I had a glance at my old notes yesterday, and I was 80kg at 28 weeks - so at 85kg now at 25 weeks, I'm not that far away from my weight the last time (especially as I started out at just under 70kg the last time)

Oh, and to convert... (I've spent too long in kg only countries I think!)
70kg is about 11 stone
80 kg is about 12 stone 8lbs
85 kg is about 13 stone 5lb
(so I'm certainly not light)

I have a slightly different problem but still worried about not putting on much weight. I started out at 8st 12lbs with a BMI for 19 (low end of the 'normal' range). I'm now nearly 24 weeks and am 9st 3lbs, so have gained 5lbs so far. Any idea if that is 'normal'/enough? I'm eating more than usual, although possibly more heathily having cut out starbucks and booze Wink

i have this problem! this is my 3rd pregnancy and was my heaviest at book in with a bmi of 27 i have actually lost weight and went down to a bmi of 25! i am now 26 weeks and havent put any back on! midwife says this is ok as i am in a healthy bmi range but this never happened with previous pregnancys.

I'm definitely not worried about my weight gain or lack of it. Tomorrow I am 25 weeks and after initially losing 2stone in the weeks up to 16weeks with morning sickness so far I have gained only 2lbs of those back. So I'm still almost 2 stone lighter than my pre preg weight, and a few lbs lighter than my 12 week scan weight. But my BMI is high, and so I think I have enough fat reserves to see me and baby right through. I can't see me staying at this weight much longer, my appetite has increased over the past few days, but so far I've not starved myself and have been eating really healthily.

Wombat33 · 19/05/2011 18:02

Thanks Lilly that site says I'm underweight and getting further and further behind where I should be... think I''ll double-check with the consultant that she's still not worried...

HandMini · 19/05/2011 18:06

I don't think you should worry about weight gain or otherwise. I base this on the fact that the midwives weighed me once at my booking appointment and have not done so since (now 39 weeks) so I don't think it can be that critical. Certainly if you're worried about weight from your own perspective rather than the baby's, then leave it till after birth (and maybe after breastfeeding?) to think about what you want to do.
