Why Big Pants and not Thongs?

Just wondering why all the maternity underwear I see is all big pants? I am a thong/g-string girl and have not worn big pants/briefs in over 10 years. I just can't imagine going back to wearing pants!

Do thongs get really uncomfortable later in pregnancy or something?

I never bought matertibty undies. I am not a thong girl. I wear mini's usually and they happily sat under the bump. I guess a thong would do teh same - and therefore therefore there is no need for specialist maternity sizing.

If OTOH you are a big pants girl then they would get uncomfortable during pregnancy if they naturally come over the bump and therefore there is a market to make them with a bump sized expansion/pouch IYSWIM.

I wore ordinary underwear the whole way through including thongs, although i am sure on my rather large bottom this was far from attractive! I think a lot of the maternity things are just marketing ploys to make money out of excited women!

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 15/05/2011 23:17

I am a thong girl but have more recently (34 weeks) moved to knickers. Everything started to feel a bit tight and chafey.

Do make sure you have some big knickers for afterwards. Thongs and massive maternity pads won't mix!

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 15/05/2011 23:18

Oh, and also, if you have under-bump trousers, when your bump is bigger you can't see if they are getting really low and showing pubes! Bigger knickers help with this!
Actual maternity knickers (over-the-bump) are the vilest, yet comfiest thing you will ever wear.

I am a thong girl too and with my DD I went and bought some of those cheapy 5 pack thongs from Asda in a bigger size. I will be doing the same with this pregnancy.

midori1999 · 15/05/2011 23:27

I usually wear thongs but this meant when my waters broke very early in a previosu pregnancy I had to borrow a sanitary towel from my neighbour/friend and then wear it to the hospital in a thong, I felt extremely silly. Grin

Since my bump developed this time I am in the big pants I got for after the birth/my hospital stay last time. I find them much more comfortable than thongs and never thought I'd find myself saying that!

I've never bothered with maternity underwear either.

gillybean2 · 16/05/2011 01:42

Even if you keep wearing a string during pregnancy you will need bigger pants after you've had the baby. Maternity pads are huge and I was told to use two at a time! You will need to use them for 2-4 weeks after giving birth.

Doesn't have to be maternity pants though, but you'll definitely need more coverage.

MrsTittleMouse · 16/05/2011 02:10

I agree with everyone else - you might be comfy in thongs now, but after the birth you will be grateful for big pants! Mind you, I bought regular pants in black and two sizes too big for my postnatal needs - no need to buy proper maternity pants, especially as loads that I have seen are white. Confused

FirstTimeMam2011 · 21/05/2011 10:35

That all makes a lot of sence ladies, thanks!

Although I'm back in big pants sooner than I thought I would be. I started bleeding on Monday evening. Very worried it might be a mc, and have posted in the mc forum.

But the big pants hold the pads in place much better than a thong. Yes I did try put on the pad onto a thong.... Not comfy Hmm

Hopefully the bleeding will stop soon and baby is ok x

No idea why, but I didnt think people wore thongs anymore. Ive clearly been living in some sort of bubble.Confused

nickelbabe · 21/05/2011 11:53

I would never wear a thong by choice.
especially pregnant - you've got enough to deal with without cheese wire up your bum,.

Plus, aren't you more likely to get thrush with a thong?
wouldn't want thaton top of it all.#

nickelbabe · 21/05/2011 11:55

sorry, didn't read your update.

Hope everything's okay.

FirstTimeMam2011 · 21/05/2011 11:57

Actually since wearing briefs/pants my bum cheeks feel a bit sweatier which is only adding to my discomfort.
The thongs/gstrings give my bum cheeks a bit more breathing space. Its not like cheese wire! Lol thanks you cheered me up a bit nickel.

no probs Grin

(you can tell i'm a big knickers wearer, can you? Grin )

IslaValargeone · 21/05/2011 12:15

I thonged throughout. Hope everything is ok xx

buttonmoon78 · 21/05/2011 12:49

I am a shorts wearer myself or Brazilians from M&S. Though DH gets v confused as they're nothing like the wax version of a Brazilian would have you believe!

I hope all is well FirstTime

lilly13 · 21/05/2011 13:43

i think it depends on one's size... i was size 8 pre-preg. i've been wearing thongs all pregnancy (cotton ones from calvin klein stay on the best), in late pregnancy i put on over 2 stone and size medium fits perfectly... i have not worn any pants... now 41 weeks

Mumswang · 21/05/2011 13:47

Piles. Wait till you get piles

LadyGoneGaga · 21/05/2011 16:48

I normally wear thongs but just find later on everything gets a bit, well, swollen down there (and also arse had gotten massive so thonmgs no longer flattering) so prefer pants. I wear sort of under the bump boy shorts from H&M maternity. Much comfier and will work with the mahoosive pads.

FirstTimeMam2011 · 21/05/2011 20:35

I picked up some 'mini' pants in F&F's at Tescos a pack of 5 is only £4/?5. They have a nice wide gussett so thats good. Plus they do not go up too high in the front.

Although the decorations on them of sliced watermelons are a little strange but kind of fun. DP thinks they are hillarious. Hmm

I wore my normal pants throughout pregnancy but believe me after the birth you will need more than a thong!

Borisneedsahaircut · 21/05/2011 21:08

Plus pregnant women often get piles which would be a bit uncomfy too! Grin
