Parentcraft classes - are they worth attending?

Can anyone tell me what parentcraft classes cover? I've been invited along to classes in Greenwich but the wonderful NHS has given me all of one week's notice so if I attend it will mean missing 2 weeks of my ante-natal yoga (which I have already paid for) so I'm wondering whether they are worth it but as the letter gives no clue as to what the classes cover (I have tried calling but of course no response).

I was invited to an evening session. Tbh it was all common sense and I didn't find it useful at all.

I went to parentcraft in Bexley so right next door!

We sat in a circle comparing notes on pregnancy, discussing any problems any of us had and remedies for heartburn etc! Also watched a birth vid, practising breathing exercises, chatted to the midwife about anything and everything.

Not essential I wouldn't say but nice to meet other girls in your area at the same stage of pregnancy.

I've just had a letter inviting me to them for this baby, due in January. Am wondering whether to take my 19mo DS with me

Fogi, I think the quality differs greatly depending on the hospital and who is teaching them.

I just finished my parentcraft classes and they were absolutely FANTASTIC, honestly, I only wish we had been able to have had one or two more sessions.

I've read and researched a lot during pregnancy, and I didn't think I would learn anything new, but it was actually very informative and helpful. I felt they were time well spent.

I went to a 'couples' class with DH, and my DH went from not wanting to be anywhere near the hospital during labour to being excited about being my sole birth partner.

But I have to say that we had a particularly good midwife teaching our course. There are two midwives at our hospital who teach the class one in the evenings (my class) and one during the day- and I've met the other teacher on a ward tour, and I can't imagine that her class would have been worth the bus fare based on the way she led the tour (evasively answered simple questions ect. ect. and really annoying personality).

The structure of our classes (4 classes in total) basically covered what to expect in labour, hospital policies, what to expect in the first week home. We covered a lot about birth positions and pain relief, and interestingly- how to stand up to the doctors and midwives. ;-)

I don't know if that is helpful at all. Maybe keep trying to call (frusterating, yes) and see if you can get more info from your particular hospital?

That is too bad they gave you such short notice (we had to book four months in advance!)

we didn't bother with the full course as we couldn't get away from work early enough to attend them, but we did go the evening they did the tour of the delivery and postnatal wards, which was useful (and a real eye-opener).

The class that evening didn't make me regret not doing the course - there were a huge number of people there and it was really slow-paced.

Im currently at parentcraft classes and to be honest i think i know everythin anyway through reading books and stuff, can you believe i was the only one in a class of about 10 couples who knew what pelvic floor exercises were?!

Caligula · 15/11/2005 13:44

I went because I got time off work for them

I'm not sure I learnt anything from them. Practicing breast feeding with a purple raggy doll was hilarious but absolutely no help when it came to the real thing. What I did get from them was a great group of friends who have been a fantastic support.
