Please remind me why it's supposedly not safe to use a secondhand mattress for the moses basket?

If you wash the sheets and give the mattress a good wipe with an antiseptic (it's covered with a plasticy material, so I don't think I can wash it), why shouldn't that be safe?

Because secondhand you don't know where/how it's been stored ie. could have been in a damp loft or shed and also you don't know how much sick etc. it absorbed. For the sake of a tenner just don't risk it!

mould/bacteria can grow deep within the matress that the previous babies immune system could fight but a new baby might not. As Pip says it's not worth it.

I thought it was to do with the risk of cot death. FSID recommend buying a new mattress every time.

Yes both are right...mould spores and old bacteria are thought to contribute to SIDS. Just costs £10...bite the bullet.

Didnt realise this for moses basket? Can you get new matresses for them then or need to get a new basket?

onadietcokebreak · 16/05/2011 08:10

As Jasmine says new mattresses are about a tenner.

Also isn't it also about mattresses losing shape/firmness?

sarahbeth they're £10 from mothercare or babies r us, presumably loads of other places do them too. I've never noticed them instore but was looking online last night as I need to get one.
