Mucous plug and early labour with twins

Hi I am 33+2 weeks pregnant with non-identical girl twins. As the girlies are both lying transverse I have been told I am more than likely to be having a c-section [although not yet booked in]. The girls are also estimated as being fairly large for 33 weeks at 5 pounds 9 and 4 pounds 14. I have been advised to be extremely vigilant for early labour signs and that's where my question lies.

I lost my mucous plug this morning at 6:30 when I got up - a lot of clear snotty discharge with a bloody blob in the middle that came out when I sat on the side of the bed. I then started having what felt like mild contractions every ten minutes or so. However, since then it has all gone a bit quiet, I am still feeling very uncomfortable and crampy with erratic contractions of no regularity.

My consultant has told me to call the labour ward when I start getting any sign of early labour such as contractions or waters break but she did not mention a show or if my plug comes away. I just feel really panicky that I am sitting here when I should be at the hospital getting checked out. Please help............

I would ring labour ward, they will be able to check you over. If nothing else they may want to give you steroids at that gestation to make sure lungs are mature enough if there are signs that you may go into labour soon (but are not necessarily there yet).

Better safe than sorry.

Ring the ward. It may well be nothing, but I'd rather know, wouldn't you? You're not being a bother, you're following instructions.

Let us know! At least, as you say, you're babies are a good weight if this is it!

Yes, i'd ring the labour ward too.

Good luck!!

My friend with twin girls was told to call when her plug went so I'd call too... How exciting!

Good luck.

Well ladies what a week!! I followed all your advice and called the labour ward and went in fairly quickly. I had a swab taken to check if I was in labour and this showed that I had fibranectin in my system indicating labour as possible within two weeks. Because of the way the twins are lying and due to increased Braxton Hicks I was kept in. I hoped to go home on Wednesday but woke up feeling really poorly and following some confusion with the doctors I had blood tests showing high liver levels in my blood. I then had to have a liver scan [very painful when you have a twin under your ribs!]

I was diagnosed with obstetric cholestasis [not really surprising when I consider how much I have been itching]. Anyway I finally got out of the hospitak after 8 days yesterday - what an absolute nightmare, and now I am so many drugs if you shook me I would rattle. In a lot of ways my husband and I were hoping they would decide to get the girls out but I do realise they are better off where they are for a few more weeks, it's just that I am suffering so much now!! But very glad to be home.

Thank you so much for your sensible advice.
