Sailing holiday - sea sickness OK in pregnancy?

I'm going on a sailing holiday next week and am 20 weeks pregnant. Does anyone know whether there are any over the counter sea sickness tablets that are safe in pregnancy? I asked in my pharmacists today and they said that none of the ones they stock are safe for pregnant women so wondered if anyone here has any tips.

I don't normally get sea sick when I sail but being pregnant, I've been a bit more prone to indigestion recently so am just trying to find out what I can use safely in case I"m more sea sick than normal. Doc has said it's fine to go otherwise as long as I'm not planning on winching in heavy sails or anything!

Can you take ginger capsules or wear those sea sickness bands.

I dont think you can take any travel sickness tablets, which is unfortunate as my travel sickness has gone into overdrive. However u can use the travel sickness bands which use pressure points on your wrists. I just used them when to go on holiday, and whilst I was slightly nauseous I think they did help combat some of it. There is always the option of crystalised ginger etc which 'might' help.

Fuck ginger. Anyone who talks about giner deserves a kick.

Cyclizine is a morning sickness drug which was actually developed decades ago to combat sea-sickness but was found to actually combat ms too! There have been no reported "problems" with this drug in the use of pregnant women and as its been used for decades now they would've come to light I'm sure. I myself used it for ms all the way through my pregnancy and my little boy is having a morning nap right now. :)

Was going to say cyclizine too....

i still take it at 23 weeks

also travel bands and ginger are supposed to help..... I have done lots and lots of sailing and very rarely got sea sick... if i felt a bit bad Mcvities ginger nuts really worked for me.

You know, AlpinePony, ginger does work for some people. Worked a bloody treat for me for 14 weeks. One piece and it solved the problem for hours.

Just 'cos it doesn't work for you, don't dismiss it, please.... :o

AlpinePony · 15/05/2011 09:11

Oh I'm sure it has a placebo affect on many, it's just that if you're struggling with ms there is a teeny-weeny possibility you've already considered the merits of ginger, yet people impart this piece of information as though they've just discovered a new planet in our solar-system! Wink

Thanks everyone, looks like my options are a bit limited then! Either natural remedies or a prescription drug so nothing OTC - I was hoping there might be some OTC travel sickness tablet that would be OK for pregnant women.

Anyway, I'll stock up on ginger stuff and I have those travel wrist bands already so will try those. Am a bit nervous of trying a drug I'm not familiar with just for my own comfort on a self indulgent sailing trip so might just chance it drug-free and hope I don't get too sea sick. I don't generally get bad sea sickness but with pregnancy, you never know. Maybe I'll actually have stronger sea legs than before?? Fingers crossed anyway...!

There is hardly any OTC stuff that you can buy from a pharmacist during pregnancy.

However a fair bit of the stuff a pharmacist can not sell to you, a Dr can prescribe to you, so then its free Smile
