Just took my 4th gaviscon of the day. YACK! Does anyone know if it's ok to take so many? Just got a bumper supply from the doc and they seem to taste worse than usual. Bleurgh. Moan Moan...sorry.

I've also got awful heartburn, all the time. Midwife told me gaviscon wasn't good as it contains aluminium (I drank copious amounts during my first pregnancy though and ds seems to be fine), so am reliant on huge numbers of Rennies! They don't really work but at least it makes me feel I have something to take.

Rootatoot · 12/05/2011 16:31

Aluminium?! I'm going to check ingredients! That poss gives you alzheimers I believe. Rennie don't do anything for me. Gaviscon works but not long lasting. Isn't it fun!? ;)

my pharmacist told me i could take as much of it as i liked / wanted /needed and that i could pretty much drink it (not that id want to, just swallowing it makes me vomit more often than not)

On the label it says something like no know side effects in event of overdose.

my friend suggested love heart (or refresehers) have similar ingrediants to rennies, and they WORK, taste nice, and cant over dose on them

i have 1/3 of a (giant) pack of love hearts about an hour before bed, and 10ml gaviscon before i get into bed, and for the past week or so that has worked, and havent been woken with heart burn during the night since

Nannyl ..if refreshers and love hearts work then I'll be a happy bunny! Going to try it tomorrow :) Thanks

good luck
i bought all the love hearts in sainsburys on tuesday!

jenga079 · 12/05/2011 21:35

Bluergh. Heartburn truly sucks! I'm sure the packet of my Gaviscon says it is safe in pregnancy and explains how much you can take.

Rootatoot · 12/05/2011 21:42

jenga...I will go read my packet. I bought one of those little handy packs so not sure if can read the small print. I'll see what the big bottle from the doc says. I know they say safe in pregnancy, I just wondered if it was poss to take too many. I just have a vague notion that if you take lots of antacid you need to take something else to supplement your diet but can't remember what.

Bit late to this but thought I would add that I literally drank the stuff at the end of my pregnancy.

I got the large bottles on prescription and had one downstairs and one upstais by my bed. My dr looked into it when I kept going back and asking for 2 big bottles and he said it was fine to glug ...

Hope you find a way to stop the suffering!

Darlingdamsel · 13/05/2011 07:11

Oh wow! I had no idea one could take anything and have been suffering en masse. I don't know what the little one is doing in there, but who knew it could generate such horrible acid and pain.

Off to buy some love hearts to try them.

Thanks for the heads up.

DirtyBit · 13/05/2011 07:54

I've suffered from heartburn all the way through. Gaviscon/Peptac has become ineffective now, the only thing that helps me is ranitidine tablets. Ask your doctor about them.

gkys · 13/05/2011 08:28

the best way of getting rid of heartburn is to eat citrus fruits, the extra acid in you diet will reduce the amount of acid you produce, healthy natural, but not as tasty as refreshers. also sleep at a slight incline, bend from the knees, all of this helps keep acid where it belongs

Katiebeau · 13/05/2011 08:34

Hello. gkys - after 8 months of HB in last pregnancy I know even a small orange would invoke so much pain I couldn't breathe. This won't work for everyone...... Totally agree about sleeping slightly proped up.

Gaviscon is safe in PG - heavily monitored for years to see if any bad effects and there is Al in loads of stuff we eat (natural sources too).

Interested about the refreshers though - I might try this. Of course I could just chew on DDs chalk.......

I can't abide aniseed Gaviscon, always get the mint in case anyone didn't know about it. Doesn't help the gloopyness though.

NewMummy5July2011 · 13/05/2011 08:45

Just wanted to say I feel for you all as I've suffered all the way through too. I have a big bottle of gaviscon for home, and a big bottle of rennies for when I'm out and about! Sleeping on an incline works somewhat for me, and bizzarly, chewing gum after having some gaviscon holds it off for longer. Something about chewing increases saliva which helps neutralise stomach acid. Give it a try... although my jaw hurts from chewing so much gum!

Rootatoot · 13/05/2011 09:14

Morning all.

NewMummy - thanks for tip about gum. Will get some along with refreshers and love hearts!

DarlingDamsel - glad I posted this now. I was just being a self- indulgent whinger yesterday but if this thread has helped you then that's great :)

I've just had a very uncomfortable night's sleep. Woke up choking as acid had come up. Was a bit alarming. Slept propped up all night but woke DH who is an insomniac so we've both been very restless and both have busy days today! BAH. Thank goodness it's friday!

Ranitadine from the doctors help me 100% you get it from the doctors, take it in the morning and that killer pain just goes!!!

Rootatoot · 13/05/2011 11:03

I'll ask about Ranitadine, thanks. It's pretty early for me to be getting heartburn this badly (only 26 weeks) but I'm prone to it anyway.
