Pregnancy course

Evening Ladies

I was just looking for some advice, I am almost 6 months pregnant with my first baby and a Scottish Expat living in Norway.

There is a English woman local to where I live who offers pre-natal courses who has been trained as a childcare educator through the NCT.

I am wondering if it is worth taking the course as it costs almost £350 for four nights, one of which is at the local hospital. The other three nights she will come to your house. This is the cost for me and my husband one to one with the woman. She does offer weekend courses for more than 1 couple but they are not running over the summer, this course cost £300 per couple.

I am just wondering with all the expenses we have coming up if it is really worth spending this amount of money on a course?

I am naive to think that I can learn a lot by reading the right information instead?

I would appreciate your opinions.

Can I add that a Norwegian course isn't really an option as my norwegian is quite basic and don't want to be asking my husband for a running commentary the whole time.

I think you can learn a lot from books, talking to your midwife and more importantly talk to mums. What is it that you are most concerned about?
NCT is very well thought of (I couldn't afford it either, went to the hospital for four nights) but a lot of the advantages of NCT are the contacts you make with other new mums (or so I've been told) so if you are not going to have this I think the money coudl be better spent.

Perhaps you can ask the local hospital to offer you a tour of the maternity ward and give you some one-to-one time? I appreciate your Norwegian may not be good enough but it may be that someone has good enough English there? GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the reply muttimalzwei.

I have a tour of the maternity unit booked already and my midwife is lovely. All the Norwegians are very good at english so that isn't a worry.

I had read on some other threads that the classes were a great place to meet new friends. I have joined a pregnancy yoga class and have made some friends there and once the baby arrives there is a mum and baby class at the international school.

Think I have convinced myself not to sign up.
