Yes as long as they are cooked, I had one for lunch today, yum.

lolajane2009 · 09/05/2011 19:49

yep they are fine, as is sushi.... both yummy

Weirdly, prawn sandwiches were one of the only things I could stomach in the early months of my first of pregnancy. I reckon I must have had one for lunch 4-5 days pw for the first 5 months. DS1 is fine and now a healthy 10yo, although his behaviour can be testing, I doubt I can blame that on the prawns. Grin

I have been avoiding prawns and I love tehn!!! I know what I am having for lunch tomorrow Grin

PipCarrier · 09/05/2011 20:55

I'm confused - I thought prawns in prawn mayo sandwiches were raw Confused

create · 09/05/2011 20:57

pink prawns are cooked - they're a kind of grey colour when raw

onepieceofcremeegg · 09/05/2011 20:57

Pip if you go and look at actual raw prawns (sold in most supermarkets in the freezer section) they look completely different to cooked prawns. cooked are pale pink. raw are an odd grey colour.
All prawn sandwiches afaik are cooked (and then chilled) prawns, i.e. pink.

Just make sure you keep them refrigerated and only buy in date from reputable sources. :)

is mayo safe to eat now then?? i'm sure we were told not to when i was pregnant.

FessaEst · 09/05/2011 22:38

It is only homemade mayo you need to avoid, due to the egg content etc. Shop bought mayo is fine.

licoriceGreen · 09/05/2011 22:40

Pasteurised mayo is fine just not the one made with raw eggs.

sharbie · 09/05/2011 22:47

ok Smile i really missed coleslaw when i was pregnant back in the day

lolajane2009 · 09/05/2011 22:51

I'm sure it is something to do with the fish having been frozen before it was served. shop bought coleslaw is fine too.

otchayaniye · 10/05/2011 07:17

Sashimi (raw fish) is fine as it's almost always (unless you are eating in the finest, finest $$$$$$$ Japanese restaurants, and even then....) frozen beforehand, which kills the bugs.

Sushi on the other hand is the rice, and rice CAN be a source of food poisoning (I read it's the most common source of food poisoning) so maybe one to avoid if it's home made, or you've left it at room temp for too long (bleurgh)

I ate sashimi regularly when I was pregnant with DD1 and working in Tokyo.

Oh, I eat M&S prawn sandwiches regularly. But check the date stamp. They are cheeky bastards and put the fresher ones at the back!

otchayaniye · 10/05/2011 07:18

Oh, and if you've made home made mayonnaise with lion stamp eggs you are fine, Besides, it's a salmonella risk (not too bad but will make you ill) rather than a listeria risk (very, very rare, but nasty and can trigger miscarriage)

otchayaniye · 10/05/2011 07:19

"and who eats raw prawns ?! Not even in sushi!"

I've eaten many a raw sashimi prawn. Not when pregnant though.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 10/05/2011 08:50

Freezing does not kill bugs. Only cooking at high temps kills bugs. Freezing merely puts them into abeyance and slows down decomposition. Do NOT assume that frozen food is safe merely because it has been frozen.

OK, public health warning over.

otchayaniye · 10/05/2011 09:15

Yes, but it kills the flukes and critters.
