What is the motion on these? I want a nursing chair and was thinking of a rocking chair - gliders seem to be everywhere - do they just move back and forward?? Any thoughts??

Yes it's backwards and forwards but on a sort of arc so it doesnt just feel like backwards and forwards. They are nice but if you get one get one with adjustable arms as you may find you can't nurse in it longer than a few weeks.

In fact I have seen 'double' ones which are much better for feeding in.

or save yourself £200 and get a Poang rocker from Ikea. They do a perfectly good job.

imvho the ikea ones aren't up to much. We have a glider we picked up second hand and while i Love it and have fed in it A LOT I'm not sure i would have bought one especialy unless was cheap or i wanted a comfy chair anyway. I would have been fine on the sofa (but then i'm a bit resistant to all the bf parafinalia). Ds is a big 15mo and we can still feed in it very comfortably.

had thought about the ikea rocker - would that mean I HAVE TO GO TO IKEA to check it out???? any excuse for an ikea trip!! lol!!

I love my glider chair, IMO it is a much nicer movement than a rocker, smooth and calm. It was perfect for when DD1 moved into her own bedroom and still needed a night feed, as previous to that I had just sat on the edge of my bed.
There is definitely something soothing, being able to cuddle your DC when poorly/sleepy/crying etc and 'gliding'.
Will keep my chair for a few more years now I have an 8week old DD. I got my moneys worth!

Ikea chair v comfy and great back support but not for rocking.

Go to john lewis and try out a glider to see if you like.

i have a glider chair with footstool from mothercare. it is fairly comfortable and fun to glide on :) however i have only sat on it with the baby about 3 times, because it is so bloody creaky! definately not good for night time or whenever the baby getting tired :( i darent tell the people who kindly bought it for me that is too noisy to sit on! Blush
it is the cushions that make the creaking sound, not the actual chair itself. a real shame! i did find it very handy in labour though i frantically rocked back and forth on it which soothed contractions for some reason, so it wasnt a complete waste lol!

My friend and I both have glider chairs which we use for nursing the baby. We both find them extremely relaxing and a great way to spend some quality time with the baby. There are some decent reviews here glider chairs

I have a glider and footstool. It was expensive, but has had a lot of use. Good for feeding in the early days, cuddles, rocking poorly babies at 3am and until I ran out of room on my lap with bump #3, I still sat in it to read to my 3 (and sometimes 5) year old on my lap.

Looking forward to another few years of use when baby 3 arrives and it should still be worth something for resale afterwards.

I have an old fashioned wooden rocker and wouldnt change it for the world! Got it second hand from a mother who was done rocking her babies so she was very glad to see it going to a newborns home. All the gliders I saw were upholstered and couldnt handle the spit-up situation my DD had (well, they probably could but why generate MORE laundry?). Also, thinking about the future was worried about little fingers getting smooshed in the glider mechanism.
