Best uplifting non-wired bra?

I'm 10 weeks and still wearing my underwired bras, but my friend said I shouldn't be wearing wired bras, so I'm trying to find a decent plain non wired bra that gives a bit of uplift to my 34es which are likely to grow a bit! I like a t-shirt type bra in white, black or nude that isn't too mumsy...any ideas?

Googie - I don't think they exist! I don't even have a big bust but the maternity bras I got from m and s where awful, may as well have not been wearing a bra. I've gone back to wires - am still comfortable and they're not restrictive.

They also seem to be cut too high and would show above most of my tops.

Will be intrigued to see if anyone has found any!

Jill72 · 09/05/2011 08:21

I am a an E cup and the thought of facing the world WITHOUT underwire is unthinkable!!! I can NOT imagine how an un wired bra could support a busty girl. Happy to wear one if in the house or after baby arrives but going to work would be a no no.

KatyN · 09/05/2011 08:23

I've just bought one from Bravissimo... can't promise the uplift yet as I'm still trying to get the size right but they are nice colours rather than just black and white!

FessaEst · 09/05/2011 08:26

Bravado do quite supportive non-wired bras - the top of them looks a bit like a vest rather than a bra, so if they peek out it doesn't look too bad.

That said, I mostly wear wired bras from Bravissimo - as long as they are properly fitted they should be fine.

captainbarnacle · 09/05/2011 08:38

Wires!

I started at 36E and now (26w) just received 3 bras from Bravissimo at 38G!!! At this size, nonwired is just a no really. They are slightly on the big side (could've been a 36G or 38F I think) but very very comfortable and fit well. Personally I think that's the most important thing. I got a nonwired/nursing bra too but it's too big - however I know that in the next 3-4m I will grow to fill it Shock

icravecheese · 09/05/2011 08:53

I too am 32e and currently 17wks preg with 3rd... have to admit, I have not moved to non-wired bra's as, like the ladies say above, they are not supportive enough & make your bust look AWFUL! (not that i'm all about vanity, just feel much more comfortable in a wired bra).

I think the whole 'no wired bra's thing' is probably a little out of date now - they can use softer wiring which won't dig in and affect your milk ducts whilst preg.....i 2nd what silverangel says above - the M&S maternity bra's are totally useless, don't even go there!

When BF my 2nd baby, I discovered underwired nursing bra's on figleaves... can't remember the make, but they were FAB. I will be buying more this time round. When I get too big to fit into my current bra's, I usually switch to a sports bra for the rest of pregnancy- non-wired and do give lots of support.

However I think if you trawl through the figleaves site they now have a great selection of maternity & nursing bra's that have underwiring, so give larger busted ladies a little more support and shape compared to non-wired ones.

The best uplifting non wired bra in my experience is the old school Triumph 'Doreen' (!). It's a sturdy cross-your-heart affair that doesn't look all that fetching as lingerie, but is really comfortable and gives you 1950s style 'lift and seperate' uplift (like Joan in Madmen Grin). M&S also make a copy.

Rakhs · 09/05/2011 09:14

I don't think nice ones exist!! I'm a huge fan of the underwired bra and was really stuck as I don't do non wired.. Been told by various people that the wire can effect the growth and may cause inflammation so I'm making to with a total support bra from m and s, doesn't look great but is very comfy... Get fitted as wearing the wrong size won't help the growth..

I may try out the bravissimo one

theonlyhb2 · 09/05/2011 09:14

i have tried and tried to find some but they are all cut so high! Underwire is mega uncomfortable now (26 Wks, was 32D now 34FF at last fitting) as large bra's mean it cuts in under my arms. I got some maternity ones from mothercare and when they just out wash they make my boobs look great and dont show too much under some tops.

onadietcokebreak · 09/05/2011 09:23

You dont need non wired as long as the bra fits properly.

This will probably involve a trip to a good retailer but not M&S or mothercare who cant fit bras IMO!

Have a look at bravissimo for tips on how a good bra should fit.

Renaissance227 · 09/05/2011 09:28

I've gone from 32E to 34G at only 16 weeks and still wearing underwired bras. Like the sound of the FigLeaves underwired nursing bras for when the time comes but really like to try bras on before I buy them.
Also like the sound of Mothercare bras.
Will definitely be watching this post!

Twit · 09/05/2011 09:30

have you looked at hot Milk bras? They are meant to be really good. I am in underwired bras and am 32 weeks (36H was 32G). As long as they are properly fitted with the wires going around your boobs properly they are fine, but they do have to be properly fitted and regularly checked. I am going to be rechecked in early June and will buy a couple of non-wired nursing bras (I'll be about 36 weeks then.) but I will wait as long as possible before wearing them. I have been advised by my friendly local bra fitter to try Royce when I go in. (I don't think she stocks Hot MIlk Sad )

captainbarnacle · 09/05/2011 09:47

What onadietcokebreak said. Know how a good bra should fit, and you are there.

Regarding wires on big sizes being high under arms - that's true on the cheaper highstreet bra. I've had 38FF from BHS and they were so uncomfortable and high wired. For an extra £10 I went to bravissimo with a similar size and they were perfect.

Like dress sizes, bra sizes and cuts vary from store to store and make to make, so keep trying.

jasmine51 · 09/05/2011 09:51

I went back to underwires after my 34 Cs went up to 36 H and I was getting rashes under boobs where there was no gap between them and my bump. The Anita underwired nursing bra available from Figleaves is my choice - I have several in different sizes and find them really comfortable.

Mumswang · 09/05/2011 09:52

i have underwired nursing bars by Anita, v comfy

i also have a couple of Royce ones without wires, which do giev support, but give me funny 50's sty7le pointy boobs, which may or may not be a good thing Confused

onadietcokebreak · 09/05/2011 09:53

I agree captainbarnacle. I think you need to spend a decent amount to get a decent bra when you are a larger size. M&S and mothercare have given me some shocking advice over the years. I trained as a fitter for a brief time for an independant store 15 years ago. I know what fits and what doesnt.

I now use Fantasie Belle - never looked back. Im now a 38HH and dreading nursing bras. In fact it the wrong thing that will prob hinder me breast feeding.

onadietcokebreak · 09/05/2011 09:56

Jasmine51- A weeping rash is what I got after mothercare sold me a shit bra when I was hormonal. Lanacane powder finally cleared it up.

Mumswrang- Can I ask if the u/w bra by Anita is very supportive?

H007 · 09/05/2011 10:20

Today is my first day in a non wired bra since I was about 13. I am a 38E and bought a pack of mothercare bras, I haven't grown much if at all but the material on normal bras was making my nipples itch and possible weepy (sorry tmi). I have to admit so far I am pleasantly surprised so far so good and I haven't noticed any difference in fit, or uplift than my usual bras. Nipples also have not been itchy so far.... Got my fx

jasmine51 · 09/05/2011 12:29

onadietcokebreak I find my Anita bra very supportive, a good shape under clothes (seamless cup)and big wide straps that dont slip or stretch over time. If you order one online read the sizing very carefully as they say the cups stated actually come out one size smaller than you think so if 36G, order a 36H.

yoshimigalloway · 09/05/2011 14:01

I have an non underwired maternity bra from John Lewis. It was only £12 and I am in a 38G. I find this bra much better than the non underwired breast feeding bra from M&S whixch is no better than just wearing a vest.

the John Lewis looks okay in most things, I am thinking of getting a underwired maternity one for special occasions or wearing under certain things.

midori1999 · 09/05/2011 14:43

My boobs never seem to grow in pregnancy and only a bit once my milk comes in. I am a 36G and still wearing my wired Wonderbras, which I find give me good support and uplift and are sort of 't-shirt' styles.

I bought a couple of nursing bras in Marks and Spencer yesterday and needed a 36G still to fit, despite trying on many sizes. (I agree that if you know how a bra should fit, you don't need fitting, I find most of the department stores rubbish at this anyway) The bars are rubbish tbh, but I was losing the will to live and just wanted to buy some so I had some. These will tide me over, but afterwards I will be trying some Hotmilk or similar as they do look much more supportive.

I do have a non wired bra from Asda which is fairly supportive. It's very old fashioned looking and a kind of cross your heart style I suppose, but the best non wired I've ever tried.

otchayaniye · 09/05/2011 15:18

"i have underwired nursing bars by Anita, v comfy"

Me too. I ordered from figleaves in several sizes and picked the best (32EE) fit and wore them constantly for 2 years of feeding until I didn't need to fee so frequently.

They have soft wires, and if fitted well don't cause problems.

Will be rebuying them (as I supidly chucked them out!)

Mumswang · 09/05/2011 16:36

yes the anita bra is very supportive, just like an ordinary bra really, but more comfortable!

i did as others have done, ordered a few sizes and returned those that didn't fit

it's not the most attractive underwear i own, but more normal looking than lots of maternity bras i bought before finding this one

i am 28 weeks pregnant again and have just started wearing them again, so i'm getting my moneys worth!

Limelight · 09/05/2011 16:53

Another fan of Anita underwired feeding bras! Brilliant! Why on earth did I wear M&S saggy feeding bras during my first pregnancy/bfing DS? Well fitting underwire makes me happy therefore DD is happy.

natwebb79 · 09/05/2011 17:10

I bought these off ebay and they are fab.
