I was only just starting to wear maternity clothes at about 22 weeks. In fact I didn't tell anyone I was pg till past 24 weeks and everyone was quite surprised as I didn't really look pg.

smartyparts · 08/05/2011 23:58

I just started to have a tiny bump at that stage which could be easily disguised.

As you're slim, I'd guess you won't really have much to show by then!

Moomin1000 · 09/05/2011 00:04

ahhhh that would be such a relief as I'm so excited i'm pregnant but so wanna keep the dress....... so would you say order a size12 or 14 dress? thanks guys for your input so exciting although the vomiting, headaches and tiredness not much fun xxx

The trouble is though is that although the bump may or not be bigger the rest of you won't. You normally buy special maternity clothes in the same size as you normally are. Hence it is difficult to advise. I think you might need to discuss it with the wedding dress to shop.

kylesmybaby · 09/05/2011 00:23

agree you willl have a lovely firm bump but probably wont put on weight any where else.. difficult one. good luck xx

apricotears · 09/05/2011 00:24

I have only just developed a bump now and I am 23+5. Up until recently, it just looked as though I had eaten a big lunch! I think it is different with everyone though, as my friend looked like she was about half way along at the end of her first trimester (with her first also). Difficult for you to predict I think!

lolajane2009 · 09/05/2011 00:28

I was a 10/12 before I got pregnant and 5ft 2. I am 21 + 3 and gained 8 inches around my belly and my bump is rather promiinent now.

cookie9 · 09/05/2011 05:35

Hi Moomin1000 I was in a similar position - but got married at 10 weeks. My boobs had grown by then but dress looked good. I avoided anything that wod cause me to bloat as dress was very fitted. I am now 13+2 and do have a little bump. If you get a larger size dress it can always be taken in but it is harder to let out a smaller size.
I know you have fallen in love with your dress but think about comfort as well and whether you want people to know you are pregnant or not on the day. I had a lovely empire line Monsoon dress to change into in case my dress became too tight and uncomfortable by the evening.
Good luck

4pudding · 09/05/2011 05:51

Really? I always thought smaller women showed more more quickly.

I was 8/10 before pg and definitely looked very pg by 25 weeks.

Congratulations! It's a great time to get married - mid pregnancy glow, feeling your wriggler move plus sickness has usually ended and you aren't tired yet!

I got married in December last year when i was 21 and a bit weeks pregnant. I had an unmistakable bump (and it grew quickly after that so by return from honeymoon/25 weeks people were commenting about how it had suddenly "shot out"!) I was luckily able to wear the dress I had already bought before I knew I was pregnant because I was the same weight (due to morning sickness) and because the style was a-line and lace up so was adjustable and flared out over the bump. There are only one or two photos where you could even guess I was pregnant (not that I was trying to hide it). I doubt I would have got away with the dress at 25 weeks but as the other posters have said, everyone's different so you have to just keep an eye on the bump, go for regular try ons nearer the time and be prepared to abandon your plans at the last minute if need be. You also need to be very careful which style you choose as even buying a bigger dress won't work if the style won't suit adjustments around the bump- i.e. you love the dress now, but would it look as good if it had a bump and can a dressmaker make it hang the same/fit elsewhere properly with a bump there? Also consider that choosing a lace up allows for some last minute changes to boobs or bump whereas a button or zip up is very unforgiving. Maybe ask a dressmaker's opinion before you order? Good luck!

You need to find someone who will be able to alter it properly for you and take their advice. Iirc they should never be altered more than two sizes.

Ps congrats!

I am quite petite, weighed 48kgs pre pregnancy and thought I would show really early too- not so much! I want a bigger bump- not obvious enough yet... still can be mistaken for one too many cream buns! Heehee. I guess we are all different hey!

Whatever happens Moomin, I am sure that you will look stunning on your special day. Just remember to relax and really enjoy the day, because it truly does go all too quickly! Congratulations by the way on the bubby and the wedding Smile

FluffyDonkey · 09/05/2011 09:14

I'd get advice from a professional dressmaker.
I was a slim size 10 before getting pregnant. Now at 19 weeks you can definately tell I'm pregnant and I've been in maternity clothes for over 4 weeks (they are sooo comfy!)

The last of my pre-pregnancy clothes that I can fit into are my jeans, which I accidently bought as a size 12, but I can't do them up and have to use a hairband to close them, plus they're not very comfortable.

It's difficult to predict how your bump will grow. Mine didn't grow for ages then came out overnight. Then didn't grow again for 3 weeks, then started again.

My biggest tip for your wedding day is drink lots of water! You need a lot more water when pregnant, and it'll probably be a hot day - you don't want to faint! Don't worry about needing to go to the loo too much, I'm drinking more than 2 litres a day at the moment and don't go to the loo as much as before getting pregnant! (sorry if TMI!)

PS congratulations on the wedding and the pregnancy!!! What a year!!! Grin

Moomin1000 · 09/05/2011 10:26

Thank you so much for advice guys.... I'm reluctant to go to wedding dress shop yet and make big decisions ass such early days i mean if i order another dress that will cost another £600 so notexactly cheap......oohhh the dilemmas of it all.... but thanks guys xxx

Hi, I am size 10 and am 27 weeks pregnant and I have just meausred my bump so you could get some idea is 95cm measured at the Belly button. It's probably grown 2-3cm in the last week. I haven't put on general weight it's mainly bump. The problem with getting a bigger size will be that it may swamp you or not fit you on the boobs. My DD's are now F's!! Like everyone suggests, it's unpredictable and unique to you, so I would ask for professional advice and have a design that allows you to have a bump and look beautiful. I'm still wearing some normal clothes, just the ones that are more flowing.

supadupacreameggscupa · 09/05/2011 12:40

I would take advice from the shop, they will have had this happen before.

Just one thing though, You might not want to wear the dress if you are anything like me. Very very uncomfortable...you might just want a loose fitting dress by then (hence the empire line designs...)

Saffra · 09/05/2011 12:53

Congratulations on the wedding and pregnancy!!

I'm size 10 and 20 weeks pregnant. In the past couple of weeks, my bump has grown much bigger, and I definitely have a noticeable bump. So, by 25 weeks, I'll be bigger again. I tend to find that I'm also extra big (bloated!) on some days too, so clothes that might be comfortable on one day may not be so great the next.

Not only that, my boobs are now MUCH bigger.

If I were you, I'd definitely speak to the wedding dress shop and see what they say. And, the further in advance, the better too. As others have said, it's not just a case of going up a size or two, as you won't be the same size all over.

There are some designers that specialise in maternity. Some styles may be more forgiving too. My SIL was pg (although only 12 weeks) when she got married, and had a lace up style corset at the back rather than buttons/zip. She could also loosen it slightly later on in the day after she'd eaten, etc. Don't underestimate how much you might want comfort as well as style!

kettleboiler · 09/05/2011 15:00

I'm getting married at the end of June and will be 28 weeks by then. I bought my dress online fron Tiffany Rose - they have a couple of lovely styles and are maternity so have stretch. Not bad prices when compared with other options. Have a look.

Joannezipan · 09/05/2011 16:41

My cousin got married at 23 weeks and definatly looked pregnant. She is 5'2'' and about a size 10/12. She went to the dress shop and met with the seamstress who would be doing the alterations, whol told her to pick the dress she liked and that it was her job to make it fit on the day. The only other tip is not to pick anything with crystals under the arms as they cut her upper arms to shreds!

hmmmum · 09/05/2011 17:25

how tall are you moomin? If you're tall your bump may take longer to pop out as the baby will have more room lengthways to move about. I'm tall and didn't have much of a bump at all at 25 weeks, neither did another tall pal of mine, but our petite friend who's the same dress size had a massive bump at 25 weeks. I don't think height always affects it or anything, but it might be one factor to consider!

highheelsandequations · 09/05/2011 17:58

Congratulations on the wedding and the pregnancy. I'm 5'7", was size 8 pre pregnancy and looked very pregnant by 20 weeks, big obvious bump plus much bigger boobs, it's so difficult to tell as everyone's different, would definitely speak to your dress fitters before spending lots of money. I tried wearing clothes in a bigger size for a while but found them very unflattering, whereas maternity clothes fit in the right places.
