I realised today that I lost about 4 kilos over my 33-37 weeks (since I was diagnosed with GD and started diet). Can't be good, right?
Anyone else with the same problem? What are the risks?

Hi - I had GD and I lost some weight in the third trimester. I only put on a total of 3kg from my booking weight and ate A LOT during 2nd trimester and DS arrived at 3.02kg. I asked my consultant about it as I thought that if I wasn't putting on weight then I'd be harming the baby, but she put my mind to rest by saying that the baby will take what they need from you to develop as they should and that losing weight is not harmful and gives you a kickstart to getting back to your pre-pg weight after your LO is born.

At the BF workshop I went to they also told me that I'd be burning 500 calories extra a day. Cue me thinking I'd be a right slim jim once DS had made his appearance...

Nope. I must have eaten my body weight in chocolate biscuits and probably weigh more now than I did when I gave birth Blush. I'm allowing myself not to be so healthy whilst I am BFing but it'll be back to the grindstone after that :)

Good luck in the next few weeks and enjoy your new arrival!

This happened to me in both my pregnancies- both GD. With DS2 I weighed 5 lbs less the day before I had him than I did when I got pregnant, and I was only 9st at the start. DS2 was fine (6lbs 2oz) DS1 had unexplained IUGR, but fine. I was making a deliberate effort to make sure I got enough calories, lots of cheese, cream etc, but just couldn't keep the weight on. Doctors were never concerned about my weightloss. I think it just made pregnancy physically harder. With both pregnancies a couple of hours after the birth I felt like a fog had lifted and I was bouncing round the hospital.

So basically I would agree not to worry too much

Hello - I was just about to post the same thing! My bmi was far too high when I became pg and I was diagnosed with GD a week and a half ago. Since then my diet has been working to control my blood sugar but since I have cut down on the carbs and sugar I have lost 9lbs so I am only 10lbs heavier than when I was not pg. I'm almost 34 weeks so I assume this will continue til I give birth (eeek...scary how quickly the time is going in - it's my first DS!).
I am sure I am getting enough nutrients for the baby and while I get a bit hungry I can live with it if it avoids the need to go on insulin. I have an appt on Tuesday so I'll ask and report back here.

ChocolateCalculator I was about the same as you before pregnancy. Then in two trimester I gained smtg like 12kg and then since diagnosis about 4 weeks ago lost 4. I also try to eat a lot all the fatty yogurts and eggs and cheese and houmus are not very light. I guess its the reduction of carbs and more excercise which I try to do. I just worry whether baby was growing over these 4 weeks, at 33 weeks scan she was average

Hello, I had my appointment this afternoon. Consultant really pleased with how my blood sugar levels are and how well I have been coping with the amendments to my diet. I told him I was 9lb lighter than I was 2 weeks ago and he said that was fine as the baby is growing perfectly and is exactly the right weight etc. so it's doing him no harm. He said the weight loss will probably continue as my body is burning more calories than is possible to eat on the GD diet so I might actually weigh less after I give birth than when I got pregnant - which suits me just fine as long as there is no risk to my wee boy. They are going to keep an eye on it but it's nothing to worry about at the minute. Hope this helps!

I'd lost a stone on my pre pregnancy weight when I gave birth to DS after having GD. I wish I'd stuck to that way of eating instead of going on to eat all the stuff I'd been forbidden to!
