Unexpected weight loss

I was overweight before I got pregnant (BMI of 29), and I'm now almost 20 weeks. I know that due to my pre-pregnancy weight it's ok not to gain as much weight, and I've carried on eating normally. I eat fairly healthily but would always pick the tastier version of things, eg. butter not marge, wholemeal bread not white. (In health terms I guess sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes not!)

My concern is that a couple of weeks ago I had gained 9lbs, but I now seem to have lost 4lbs and so am only 5lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight. I weighed naked, first thing in the morning etc both times so it should be fairly accurate. I haven't had morning sickness. I'm not worried about the 5lb gain, but more about the drop from 9lbs. I have been quite stressed lately (death in the family) but have been making an effort to continue eating normally and certainly haven't been on the kind of diet that would normally be required to lose 4lbs in 2 weeks.

Do you think I need to be concerned?

Didn't want you to go unanswered, I'm not an expert but I have a normal bmi and at 20 weeks I'd only gained a couple of pounds. (full term now and have gained 2 stone!) I know of someone who had a high bmi who lost a stone in the first 20 weeks due to loss of appetite and healthy eating. Chances are because you are pregnant you are choosing healthier options. With anything in pregnancy if it's worrying you then ask your midwife-they'd much rather you asked questions than stress yourself out worrying! Hope that helps!

Thanks Milkybrew - might phone midwife on Monday just to put my mind at rest. There is just too much to worry about in pregnancy! Losing a stone is amazing - that would terrify me of course but if all was healthy then it goes to show nature knows best.

Hello Pippandpolly - I am 13 weeks, and have just had news of my mum having a very very serious illness, and in the last week alone I lost 2 pounds meaning that overall I have gained nothing so far this pg, so I do know the feeling.

I think that as long as we are making sure we eat healthy stuff a few times a day, it isn't worth thinking about.

I started off at a BMI of 26 (which had gone up from a normal one of 22 for me over a year or two) so like you I have no physical need for a high gain.

It is unspeakably awful having family stuff happen during such an emotional time, and prob we should be kind to ourselves and not fret - it is very normal to lose weight under stress.

On Mums Misbehaving on TV the other night, there was one tiny little lass featured who was pregnant with twins. She was 30 weeks and would only eat a crumpet every three days or something (she clearly had eating problems). I suspect she's the type they need to worry about, not the likes of us...

Take care x

Hi,I was talking about this on another weight thread. I'm 32 weeks & have put on half a stone. My bmi was high & gd was a risk (although just got good results back in that) so I guess I've been eating better & obviously not drinking which was my downfall! Mmmm big glass of wine & cashew nuts before dinner :)
My baby is estimated at over 5lbs & so on the max of where he should be.
Your mw will tell you if there is concerned. Make sure you are not trying to diet though!

I have just had dd3 (11 weeks ago) and would have been overweight before each pregnancy, I don't gain any weight during pregnancy at all, in the latest one I lost weight (although I was monumentally sick). I am always at my lightest for the 4 months or so after the birth, really trying to keep it off this time.

Icelollycraving · 07/05/2011 10:21

Wow wigglesock! Congrats on new baby (& all the others!)
Where they all healthy weights at birth? I'm v worried I'm having a hipcracker!!

wigglesrock · 07/05/2011 10:27

dd1- 6lbs10 and dd2 & dd3 both 8lbs 8oz Grin. The bigger ones were easier to get out!!!!

SoloIsApparentlyACougar · 07/05/2011 10:31

I lost a lot of weight when I was pg with Dd and it turned out to be an overactive thyroid. Please get checked by your gp as if it is that, it is dangerous to leave it untreated.

SoloIsApparentlyACougar · 07/05/2011 10:35

I should add that I was very slim anyway.

Icelollycraving · 07/05/2011 10:55

How are the bigger ones easier? (confused)

wigglesrock · 07/05/2011 10:58

Only joking, didn't mean to scare you Grin, dd2 and dd3 were just quite quick labours.

Icelollycraving · 07/05/2011 11:02

Oh right! Thought there was some labour secret :)
