What's the bare minimum required for a newborn, clotheswise?

I have so many bloody clothes from DS, and we just don't have the room for it all. It's going to the charity shop ASAP. How many sleepsuits, vests, rompers etc. Do you think is the bare minimum?
I was thinking 7 vests, 5 sleepsuits, 5 rompers, a couple of soft trousers and t-shirts, a couple of jackets and 2 coats

Is this too few though?

not really, three weeks and baby will have grown to next size.

dd2 lived in a swaddle blanket for first three weeks, it was easier for everything, changing bum, midwife checks, cleaning, skin to skin and it saved on the washing!

Depends on how long you're staying in the hospital maybe? I'm in France where the average stay is 4 days and all I can remember off my huge list of things to take to the hospital is that the baby needs 7 sleepsuits!!!!

As this is my first I'm assuming it's because I won't be able to wash anything whilst in the hospital...but it was a bit of a shock!

Have just checked and for the hospital stay thet also say 7 vests and 3 cardigans

ginmakesitallok · 06/05/2011 12:24

I'd say definitely too little - unless you want to spend your entire time washing. Both DDs could easily go through 3 changes a day.

MrsChemist · 06/05/2011 12:54

I'll be out of hospital as fast as my little legs can carry me. No bad experiences last time, I just found night time very lonely and tiring.

I'd also completely blanked out the fact that DS would go through many outfits a day. Here I was thinking 5 sleepsuits would last 5 days

Hmm..... double everything?

You could probably cope without the daywear, tbh. Newborn size, just vests, sleepsuits, cardigans, and a coat. But I would have at least 10 vests and at least 10 sleepsuits.

On DC3 here and have mountains of stuff, reduced stuff down to favourites, but I am keeping stacks of baby grows (the all in one poppered up type). I went through loads of these a day with DC2 and didn?t have the time to turn the washing around like I did the first time.

Depends when you are due too, if it?s a summer baby I?d keep a few more vests in case that is all they wear if it?s really hot.

colditz · 06/05/2011 21:17

Not too few, it's plenty.

colditz · 06/05/2011 21:18

If you have a tumble drier it will be fine.

MrsChemist · 06/05/2011 21:44

I've no tumble drier Sad
I would do without daywear, but I got a lot of hassle from my parents with DS. If I took him out in a sleepsuit, they'd complain that he wasn't dressed. I need a few just to keep them happy.
It's not just for newborn stuff, of course, it's working out how much I'll need all the way up to 12mo, and putting them in suitcases based on size.

There's so fucking much of it. I have over 30 bibs. THIRTY! I've not a damned clue where they all came from either. I have nearly 20 of those little hats with the knots in the top as well.
They must breed in drawer or something.

DD! had reflux so 30 bibs sounds about right to me - but I know that's not the norm. I would keep more stuff - have you tried those bags that you use the hoover on to suck out the air? Take up less space in the suitcase.

onepieceofcremeegg · 06/05/2011 21:55

It does vary so much on the baby ime. I didn't understand what muslin squares or bibs were for until we had dd2. She dribbled all the time and sicked up milk all the time, I mentioned it to my mum and laughed. She said that we had been lucky with dd1 who was quite "clean". dd2 was perfectly fine. :)
Also depends on how often you can/choose to do laundry and if you can get it dry quickly.
Do you change clothes routinely every single day? If so you will need more.

MrsChemist · 06/05/2011 22:07

Well, I need to wash DH's chef whites every couple of days, so washing regularly isn't a problem. Drying quickly is though, unless the weather is very nice or I have the radiators on. If I were desperate, I could wander to the laundrette to use to dryers.

I just don't want to end up like last time, where I would just keep putting DS in clean clothes instead of washing the dirty ones, and then end up with a washing mountain.

I've sorted out all the unisex clothes from when dd was little (having a ds this time). I've got in newborn and 0-3 months mixed together...

15 vests, 17 babygro whatsits, 8 cardigans, 5 t-shirts, 4 pairs of cotton trousers with feet, 1 jacket, 1 pram suit, a million muslins and bibs, 3 hats and 3 fleecy sleepsuits.

I think that's more than enough tbh. I reckon I've got a similar amount of unisex stuff for each age up to 1yr. I'm certainly not buying anything.
