I am pregnant with first baby, first grandchild in both families. Because of divorce he will have 3 Grandads, all of whom he will see regularly. Grandmas is easy - one is Grandma, one is Nan. How do people differentiate between Grandads with their children? (Neither DH nor I had more than one Grandad growing up so it was never an issue!)

My 3 have a grandad and a grandpa, shortened to Pa. I never had any grandfathers growing up so I found it a bit weird. Although both grannys are called Nana. Although I have my suspicions that my mother chose Nana because it was easy to say and she could tell people it was one of the babies first words Grin

What do they want to be called? We called our grandmother's second husband by his given name (his choice I believe). Our other two grandfathers were Opa [Firstname] and Grampa [sillynickname].

d0gFace · 06/05/2011 12:29

Ask them what they prefer? Some people can be abit funny about name.

d0gFace · 06/05/2011 12:30

*names

apple99 · 06/05/2011 12:37

We have Grandad (name) and Grandpa (name), both Granny's are Granny (name).

chandellina · 06/05/2011 15:47

my son has three grandfathers - his grandmother's husband is just known by his name while my father is Grandpa/ name optional and my stepfather is Grandpa name.

spatchcock · 06/05/2011 15:52

I'm with d0g - I referred to my mum as 'grandma' the other day and she looked absolutely aghast. She's going to make up her own mind at some point.

PrincessScrumpy · 06/05/2011 16:19

dd has Grandad with fish and Grandad with the cat (who is about to get chickens so that will probably change)

LoonyRationalist · 06/05/2011 16:51

Ask them what they want, we have Grandad, Grandma, Abuelo (Grandad in spanish for my spanish FIL) and my mum wanted to be just her name. I like having individual names for them all.

dizzy77 · 06/05/2011 18:19

I offered my parents the choice as it's their first grandchild: DH's parents are already Nanny and Grandad to my nieces, and whilst mine were both Nanny [Name] and Grandad [Name], my dad recently lost his dad who shared his forename, so didn't want to assume he'd immediately step into Grandad [Dad's name]'s shoes. That said, he's indicated to my sister that Grandad [Dad's name] "is tested and it works" so suspect we'll go with it.

Valiant1 · 06/05/2011 18:52

we have Grandad Farm (they own a farm) Grandad and my mums new husband is uncle P, but my sisters dc call him Grandad P*. Then we have Nan and Nanny Farm and my dads wife is E** as she is only 27! but my mum was very against been nan at first she wanted to be Grandma and i think its up to the kids they will call them what they want in the end x

emmah194 · 06/05/2011 19:31

Only my dad as a living grandad so it's just grandad. And similarly only my mum and she is nana. However I also have a nana and grandad who are both alive (although not together, one is mums mum the other is dads dad) and my DS calls them big grandad or Big G fr short, an little nana. Not sire why really but it does seem to fit them both well!

Rootatoot · 06/05/2011 20:53

Ours will have Gran (my mum) and Nana (DH's Mum) and Grandad (My Dad), Granpy (DH's Dad, Welsh...they say Granpy bit like Granpa I think!) and I suppose Dh's Stepmum will just be her name or Nana Name and Dh's stepdad, his name or Grandad Name.

I agree with asking them tho. My Mum would hate to be Nana and MIL would hate to be Gran! :)

WidowWadman · 06/05/2011 20:55

Husband's parents are granny and grampy, my parents are Oma and Opa. Bilingualism rocks.

MrsNoggin · 06/05/2011 20:55

DD has a Nana & Grandad and a Granny and Grandpa. And my dad, who is long gone, but still in photos etc. is referred to as Grandpoppy. Because I called him Pops and I have many fond memories of him pretending to hate it.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 06/05/2011 20:59

We have Poppa and Grandad, chosen by the men in question. But you're right, it can get quite complicated! My children have Granny and Poppa, Nana, Grandad and X (he got married again, we just call her by her name), and also a Great Nana...

mumcanIaskaquestion · 06/05/2011 21:54

We have/ had

Nanny round the cornor (my mum)
Nanny & Grandad (dh parents)
Grandad with the cats (my dad)
Grandad in a wheelchair (my Grandad).

growing3rdbump · 07/05/2011 02:40

My children have Grandma and Grandad (DH's parents) and Nanny and Grampy (my parents). I loved having a 'Grampy' myself and so was keen for my Dad to also be a Grampy!
