Anyone had a UTI in pregnancy? How long for the pain to go?

After about 4 days with stomach pain (which I assumed was growing pain) I went to the gyne yesterday who diagnosed me with a UTI, gave me antibiotics, signed me off work and told me to rest.

She also said if I even have the slightest bit of pain on Monday, then I've got to get a scan done to check on the baby.

I admit to being tempted to going for a scan anyway - I'm 18 weeks and my first scan was at 12 weeks and my second is planned for in 4 weeks time...

But in the meantime I'm doubled over in pain whenever I stand up and I would like to know how long this could last? Anyone had any experience of this?

I had one while I was pregnant, it was horrible! I think that once I had the AB the pain reduced a lot within 24 hrs. If it doesn't then you need to switch ABs.
Hope you feel better soon

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and had one a couple of weeks ago - Easter weekend to be precise so a bit of a nightmare having to get an appointment with an out of hours GP!
Anyway, I can totally sympathise. It was horrible, feeling like I needed to go to the toilet constantly - then as soon as I'd gone I'd immediately feel like I neededto go again!
Dr gave me antibiotics and within 24 hours I felt much more human again and within a few days back to normal.
I did go and see my midwife later that week and was able to listen to baby's hb to reassure me and now have my scan in 2 weeks time.
Hope you're feeling more human soon

I had numerous when I was pregnant with my last one. Took about 48 hours, but it depended on the severity and how long I had left it.
This time I am being tested monthly (lab not dipstick) so hopefully there won't be too much scope for treatment delay if I get any.

Forgot to say the antibiotics I was given for my first, once the lab report came back I had to be put on a different one due to resisdency.

Thanks. pain is going slightly but that might also be because I'm doing sod all!

I just have to wait for the lab results now which should be tonight. Thing is gyne told me she's on holiday next week so I don't know if she'll get my results before she leaves, in which case she won't be able to change my AB if necessary...

Think I'll go for a scan on Monday whatever just to reassure myself that all is ok.

I had a bad UTI at around 28 weeks and the first round of penicillin didn't clear it up, so I went on something else (amoxcyllin I think? Was a 3 day course.)

The pain was quite different from when I had a UTI in my early 20s - no major burning as such, but definitely painful pressure when I walked, and frequent trips to the loo but nothing really coming out.

If you're not feeling better by Monday then you may need a different course of ABs. Hopefully she has a colleague who could help you instead?

Oh, and I didn't have an extra scan - but of course that's up to your HCPs.

I had my first admission to hospital with pyelonephritis at about 30 weeks, am now 36 weeks and still in pain - the infection is under control thanks to antibiotics (first drip, then 3 week long full oral courses, now on maintenance antobiosis), but I have developed hydronephrosis - basically one of my ureters (the tube from the kidney to my bladder) is blocked a little bit, probably because of the uterus pressing onto it) so urine is held back in the kidney a bit, causing swelling, dilatating of the ureter, which is painful.

When the infection was first present, the pain was permanent, now the stronger pain comes in attacks, mostly in the evenings. I've basically have been in pain for the best part of 6 weeks, and don't expect it to get better until the baby is delivered.

There is the option of a ureteral stent, which isn't as easy to place in pregnant patients as it is in non-pregnant ones, and comes with its own risks, so currently I'm bearing it with the help of painkillers when I can't cope at all, to avoid this.

Will discuss options with obstetrician again next week, being followed up regularly, have racked up 11 sick days because of this in the space of 4 weeks, 2 hospital stays, and numerous visits to the triage unit.

Sorry to not have a more cheerful story.

Being doubled up in pain is certainly not good, and antibiosis should kick in quickly, if the bug is sensitive to it - I went from being very ill (chills, fever, vomiting, bug could be isolated in my blood) to feeling ok-ish within hours, just after two IV doses. Have they done a culture of your urine to see whether it is suspectible to the antibiotic you have been subscribed?

If this is not getting better and the pain is not subsiding, I would not wait until monday.
