I had my check up today and me and doctor were talking..i asked his a advice about using machines and what not..he told me this:

It is not 100 percent safe to use a doppler...because what it does..it transmits the waves into your belly and then recieves an echo that is coming back from the waves..in order to hear you babys heartbeat..it's called my baybs beat..Brilliant!!

he explained that using the app for hearing your babys heartbeat he so much safer because it's based only on recieving and listening and not transmiting!!! (by putting it on airplain mode) so it does not harm your baby..

I really thought i knew things...but this is news to me..

I have reported this poster and thread to mumsnet for repeated advertising of this scam product.
Please ignore - no doctor/midwife is going to advise you to use an iphone app instead of a monitor.

That being said, there's a school of thought that it would be better if midwives all listened in with old-fashioned 'pinards' which actually amplify the baby's heartbeat rather than using ultrasonic waves.

As you were. Smile

Thanks squiggley. My MW says that when the baby is big enough she'll switch to using a pinard because it's more reliable than a doppler anyway.

so is a doppler bad???

CBear6 · 08/05/2011 18:13

No, dopplers aren't bad when used properly by a trained professional. Even the home use ones aren't bad per se, they're great for bonding purposes but shouldn't be used as a diagnostic tool or instead of proper medical advice, if you see what I mean. For how often one is used in a normal pregnancy, even the home dopplers, it's fine.

The iPhone app on the other hand is a waste of money that borders into the realms of big fat scam and the creators have been employing people to go on forums like this one and post about how it's the greatest app ever and medically recommended and blah blah blah - very underhanded.

4pudding · 08/05/2011 20:59

Underhanded, illegal and immoral!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 08/05/2011 21:48

I have a doppler and use it occasionally - surely they wouldn't be able to sell them if they were harmful?!

This advertising is bad - makes people worry
