Am off on hols to spain next week..just wondered if anyone knew of any different 'food' rules for spain.....generally I just follow UK advice, but have heard some ladies mention on here that in Spain & France you are advised not to eat salad in restuarants....not sure if its because its considered riskier in Spain or its just over-cautious spanish rules...
Anyone know of any funnies in Spain that differ from our rules? Sounds paranoid I know, but I like to be armed with the info to then be able to make informed choices. THanks!

Hi, I live in Spain and I wouldn't worry about the salad, but you should probably avoid things like chorizo and jamón (they are cured but not cooked), and also make sure if you have tortilla that's its cooked in the centre. Steak tends to be served quite rare here too, so to be on the safe side ask for it to be well done (muy bien pasada). The water quality can vary from region to region, I drink the tap water where I live, but again, maybe bottled is the safest. TBH I don't think food hygiene is any worse in Spain than in the UK, if anything, I would say it's a cleaner country:) But I suppose it all comes down to the restaurant in question. Can't think of anything else really, hope this helps and that you have a great holiday.

When I lived in Spain (in Madrid) and was pregnant, they told me not to drink tap water from "other regions", not because there was anything wrong with it, but because it would be different and therefore problematic. Confused !!

I had a friend who is Spanish, lived in the UK when she was pregnant, but used to travel between the two a lot, and she said she used to eat chorizo when she was in England (because the English doctors hadn't told her not to) and peanuts when she was in Spain (because the Spanish doctors hadn't told her not to. !! :)

Thank you RingEir - I'm spending 2 weeks in Spain later on this year, and was starting to wonder about the same thing. I have had chorizo which is chopped / cooked, so am guessing that that will be ok. Hope so: am looking forward to it!! Yum yum...........

Now all I have to do is find something to wear for a posh wedding in Leon when I'm 29 weeks gone with twins...

You're very welcome! I'm such a hypocrite, I have eaten uncooked chorizo and jamón myself Blush, but I am trying to be good now. It is funny how different countries seem to care more about different things, but overall I would say Spain is a bit less puritanical. This country is so child-friendly, complete strangers smile at me in the street when they see my bump - I guess because I am contributing to the human race?:)
@Fluter - have you been to a Spanish wedding before? Chances are that there will be a lot of seafood, so you might want to be careful about that. As regards the clothes, you can't be overdressed enough:))
