I think that babies are pretty well protected in there - I had 2 v&d bugs in 2 months this pregnancy. Nice!

You do need to make sure you keep hydrated though, and I would mention it to your community midwife if you are concerned. There are certain bugs that can cause some damage to the baby, such as listeria, but it is far more likely just to be a horrible virus.

Hope you feel better soon!

I had a tummy bug last week and rang the MW about it. She said that baby would get what it needs regardless, they really are little leeches when it comes to taking what they need and your body will give the best of it's resources to the baby first, mum gets whatever is left over afterwards.

She said the main thing is to stay hydrated. Drink extra on top of the extra you're already drinking because of being pregnant. Clear fluids are best and she told me that lemonade is great because the little bit of sugar helps keep your energy up and the carbonation helps it stay down better for whatever reason. If you can eat then carbs are your friend - toast, mashed potato, pasta, etc.

She did say though that if it went on longer than 48hrs then I needed to see my GP just to get checked out so it might be worth making an appointment. The GP will check you're getting enough fluids, that your BP isn't too low, and that it's not anything nasty like food poisoning. They're reluctant to prescribe anything in pregnancy but depending how far on you are they might be able to give you something to help with the nausea or the diarrhea.

Hi there

Thanks for your responses...i've been focusing on trying to stay hydrated and eat what I can I guess my main concern was whether it was something that could pass over the placenta. To be honest though, I would imagine testing for anything would be shutting stable door after horse has bolted...things seem to be gradually improving thank goodness, and hes been wriggling a lot this morning, so am hoping that im on the mend and hes ok.......

thanks again xxx
