Hi everyone I know this is stupid I can only put it down to hormones !
Yesterday my hubbie had to go to hospital ( the orthopaedic ward) and I forgot to put the gel on my hands witha great cut on my finger!!!!

I wouldn't have thought twice about it but my friend acted like it was the worst thing in the world which freaked me out!

Since finding out I was pregnant I have become obsessed with making sure I'm ott with everything and now I'm worried!?
I am going to visit hubby now and feel like going ott with nose mask and gloves! Is anyone else feeling insecure or is it just me?????

Ps 16wks 3 days!!!!

Putting the gel on your hands is to stop you infecting any of the sick people on the ward rather than the other way round.

your friend is a twat! sorry.

Some people go a bit crazy about these things... I think your friend is one of them.

It's normal to be worried when pregnant, but I'm not completely sure exactly what you're worried about here!! I've worried pretty much constantly about all kinds of silly things during this pregnancy (my second) so I do understand what that feels like - I just think we'll be able to help you relax if we know what it is you're worrying about!!

I visited my dad in hospital when I was preg with DS2 and never used the gel things. Needless to say we are both fine.

buttonmoon78 · 02/05/2011 10:46

And breathe. Chill. Seriously. It's to stop you infecting others.

Thanks everyone I think I ve gone bonkers ! This is my 1 st pregnancy and just want to make sure I don't do anything to hurt the baby!!! Like I said I'm blaming hormones!!!
HRHJOYCE my friend made me feel Like it was dangerous to go to hospital when pregnant in case you catch germs/ infections I suppose ! And said I had to use the gel which I didn't cause I was slightly more worried about the hubby !!!!

Ah, I see!! Well, I agree with others - your friend is bonkers!! Again, as others have said, the gel is there to stop you passing infection on to the patients, not because visitors are in any way at risk.

Don't forget, even the rules they DO give pregnant women (not eating certain foods etc) are because of a very, very small risk of harm to baby, so the fact that no-one suggests pregnant women don't visit people in hospital says to me there's no more risk there than going to the supermarket or any other place with people in!! The only difference the cut on your finger makes is that the gel would have hurt like hell if you'd put the gel on - it won't make you any more likely to pick up infection when just visiting.

It's very very normal to worry when pregnant - bloody hell, I'm a dreadful worrier soI do know - but I find it helps to remember how well baby is protected in there!! I do follow all the rules and it doesn't stop me worrying, but nature is pretty impressive! In this case, you and your baby are definitely fine and your friend is a loon.

StatelyPoshBeartrothal · 02/05/2011 16:10

That would sting a lot with the cut on your finger!

I do sympathise with you, this is my 3rd pregnancy & I'm still a crazy paranoid preg lady (even tho I'm usually very chilled when not preg!). But PLEASE don't worry about going into hospital when preg-my daughter spent a good few months in hospital last year & I got to know the other parents very well. Several were heavily pregnant and we all slept on the wards every night with our poorly babies. There was no perceived risk to the pregnant ladies. Anyone with anything infectious gets a room of their own, andyou're hubby is on an orthopeadic ward so certainly not a high risk infectious ward. I would say there is no more risk of picking something up than standing next to a random person in a supermarket queue! Hope hubby gets better soon.
