Conception Indicator--Being Paranoid!

Hi everyone,

I recently found out that I am pregnant with my first. We are so excited because it took us quite a while! I used a Clearblue test with the conception indicator when I missed my period and it said 1-2 weeks pregnant. We told a few close family members and friends, but a couple of these people have talked to me non-stop about the high risks of miscarrying. So this morning I took another expecting to see a 3+ (I am 5 weeks and 4 days) but I got a 2-3 weeks result. Am I being overly anxious? As I looked through the net, I saw discussions where most women got the 3+ once they hit that 5 week mark. Thank you so much!

Throw the bloody things in the bloody bin, they're a bloody annoying bloody invention.

You are pregnant. The conception indicators are not 100% accurate and because of this cause a lot of unnecessary upset.

Bloody things.

Thank you...for the answer and the laugh:)

Same echo as Showofhands

I think they only go up to 3+ so there is enough out there to worry you without inaccurate crap!

Relax, enjoy your pregnancy and if you need some support or just to know its not just you it might be worth finding your due date tread on ante-natal or something similar as now at 38 weeks I dont know what I would have done without them since September Smile

I agree. Don't use any more, accept you are pg and don't worry what tests say they'll drive you mad if you let them!

And congratulations Grin

sevendwarves · 02/05/2011 09:09

Those tests are beyond shit, your hormone levels might be a little low but it shouldn't matter. I was 8 days late before I got a BFP but my CB digital still said not pregnant, despite positives on 4 other tests.

yoshimigalloway · 02/05/2011 09:57

this happened to me, i think it depends what time of day, how much you've drank etc. Don't take any notice, i wasted enough money on them, i'm now 20 weeks.

AbiAbi · 02/05/2011 10:03

Congratulations - with DS1 and DS2 those tests got my dates wrong, but being a bit if a numpty I argued with the doctors about it Blush who told me in no uncertain terms that those tests shouldn't be allowed on the Market for all the undue stress they cause!

Congratulations, may you have a happy healthy pregnancy.

Thank you so much everyone. I feel much calmer now!

Don't worry, my midwife at the early pregnancy unit said those tests were responsible for so much worry. They are not that exact and hcg levels can vary hugely from woman to woman in pregnancies and still be completely normal. Don't do any more as you'll drive yourself mad. I got a 2-3 week result with DD when I should have got 3 + and also made myself really worried, it was all fine of course. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

F1rstT1meMummy · 02/05/2011 14:40

Congratulations :)

I second what everyone else has said! Don't pay any attention to them, as everyone's HCG levels change. I was well over four days late before I got my BFP, and even then it wasn't very dark. I am now 32 weeks.

dldl · 02/05/2011 21:11

Those tests do cause ridiculous amounts of unnecessary worry.

You are quite right in that you are 5 weeks and 4 days since the 1st day of your last period. The test is also right in telling you that you are 2 - 3 weeks pregnant i.e. that you ovulated and conceived 2 - 3 weeks, which would be about 2 weeks after the first day of your last period and therefore makes sense.

But yes, confusing indeed!

Here's the blurb from the Clearblue packet:

How do I interpret the results?

The Conception Indicator provides an estimate of when you conceived. Your doctor will calculate your stage of pregnancy based on the first day of your last period, not from when you conceived. Conception occurs around 2 weeks after this, depending on your cycle length.

If your test result says:

Not Pregnant: you are not pregnant.

Pregnant 1-2: you are pregnant and you conceived 1-2 weeks ago. Based on a 28-day cycle, your doctor will date your pregnancy at 3-4 weeks.

Pregnant 2-3: you are pregnant and you conceived 2-3 weeks ago. Based on a 28-day cycle, your doctor will date your pregnancy at 4-5 weeks.

Pregnant 3+: you are pregnant and you conceived more than 3 weeks ago. Based on a 28-day cycle, your doctor will date your pregnancy at more than 5 weeks.

Just wanted to agree with the others. If you google HCG (pregnancy hormone) levels in pregnancy you'll see that the bands for each week of pregnancy are really wide and they also overlap, so it's impossible for a pee stick to accurately tell you where you are, especially as the level in your wee depends on time of day etc. Don't panic, it doesn't mean your hormone levels are too low.

Congratulations on your BFP by the way!

Sparklies · 03/05/2011 00:13

I have higher than average HCG levels (betas at 14/16dpo were above average for triplets!) I used one of those tests at 5w3d "to be sure" (even held my wee, didn't drink much etc) and it still said 2-3 weeks. Well, he's 4 days old now.

Load of bollocks they are!!
