Just had my 4d scan and was told a weight of almost 3lbs the sonographer didn't seem especially bothered by this but since looking at my midwife book and online it seems a little big? they have already moved my date forward by almost 2weeks and im certain of my dates - is it going to be a whopper?

I wouldn't read too much into it tbh. Scans are notoriously bad at gauging weight.

It's on the big side, but not huge and as has been said, there is a margin of error, although it is apparently less earlier on than later gestations.

My baby measured (by scan!) 3lbs 1oz at my scan at 27+6 and then 3lbs 9oz at 29 weeks. I have a scan on Weds at 31+1 and am expecting her to be around 4 1/2 lbs if she is following the same curve and that means at term she'd be around 9lb. A bit bigger than average but certainly not huge.

My most recent growth scan at 28+3 measured the baby a week ahead & was plotted on the 75th centile. They estimated his weight to be about 1330g (about 2lbs 13 I think).

I echo midori1999 Scans have upto a lb of difference at term so I really would not worry.

It is scary to think about it being bigger than average but there is very little to worry about and there are more positives to it than anything else. I am in the same situation so been doing some research.

I have got another scan on Tuesday at 38 weeks so interested to see what they say and fingers crossed soon find out the reality Smile

Mine apparently weighed 3.5lbs at 27 weeks... was told she was a bit big but that it's not an exact science and she'll probably slow down anyway. Which she has. So don't worry! HTH

Thanks everyone! Anxious about birth and not sure the prospect of a giant baby was helping.

You'll be fine. I had DS1 at term and he weighed 9lbs, DS2 at 38 weeks and he weighed 10lbs. No tears or stitches and I am looking forward to another big baby this time, if I am lucky enough to get one! Grin

Big babies are supposed to be easier to deliver, I've heard. I wouldn't know myself as DS1 came by emcs at 29 wks & weighed 2lbs 2oz.

At 18.3 wks I feel massive but can't find a soft tape measure (only a B&Q one) and can't work out where my waist is anyway. I guess I'll have to wait for my next MW appt!

I really wouldn't pay attention to guesstimations regarding baby weight, with dd1 I was constantly told I was neat and would be small at 41 weeks rocks up dd 1 at 8lb 4 oz!

cjdamoo · 02/05/2011 07:06

Try not to read to much into it. I was induced with ds 4 after a scan said he was above 10lb at 37 weeks. He was my smallest at under 8lb.....
