Heartburn hell - tips?

I had incredibly bad heartburn with DS, from around week 15 onwards milk did nothing for it and instead I was necking Gaviscon straight from the bottle. I avoided all foods that seemed to set it off (garlic mainly) and had so many pillows in bed that I was practically sleeping upright. The old wives tale was true for me - full head of hair and even hairy shoulders!

I'm 20+5 with this one and it's even worse! The Gaviscon is back out and it's doing virtually nothing. Anyone got any tips that I can try?

I had it really bad with everyone of my pregnancies, worse with my two girls, not so bad with my little boy who were yet to meet, but the best thing I did was already what your doing but eating little and often, all the time, don't let yourself go hungry as the production increases, and stay off the foods that make it worse! Ice cream was one of my best things as it was cool too! Good luck, and hope it passes x x

i had it ridiculously badly in my first 2 pregnanies, i used to swig gaviscon day and night

with my third i had cut out all dairy and didn't get it at all.

don't know if there was a link, but it's the only thing i did differently

nickelbabe · 30/04/2011 16:30

have you tried a different brand?

Setler's Heartburn tablets are suitable for pg.

It might be that a different brand has a slightly different formula and that might help.

other than that, only sympathy, i'm afraid.

ranitidine (zantac) is allowed and works wonders. Available without prescription ans supermarkets sell own brand

i was horrible with my first. got the giant gaviscon bottle and lived by it. the daytime wasnt so bad... but no matter how early or little i ate at dinner....i couldnt go to sleep....i slept very upright...

it helps to sleep only on left side (not sure why, something about the position of the stomach)

and after googling homemade remedies...the one that worked for me was swallowing a teaspoon of cider vinegar....its horrendous going down, i warn you, but it actually stopped my dinner coming back up...so worth it for me to get some sleep.

I had it really bad from wks 12-16 and although its tapered off (now 21+5), some foods trigger it (esp. sweet things :( )
I have found chewing gum after eating seems to really help - as does brushing my teeth after breakfast (I know, I should do this anyway....)

Other than that, I pop Rennies when it gets bad - can't stand the thought of Gaviscon let alone the taste! Not sure how I feel about having a v hairy baby boy though!

Coppernoddle · 30/04/2011 17:04

I agree with the dairy thing although ice-cream did work for me but cheese made it horrendous!

vj32 · 30/04/2011 17:07

I am on ranatidine. If it is really bad, see the Dr for a prescription - I ended up being prescribed it by the hospital antenatal unit so its Ok in pregnancy.

youngmumbeka · 30/04/2011 21:34

i get it really badly and the only thing thats works is renee and sitting up properly.

theonlyhb2 · 30/04/2011 21:50

its starting to get to me too and after i eat anything it feels like the back of my throat and all way down is blocked. I swig gaviscon a lot too. Told Dr and he Didnt suggest anything better for it or offer prescription.

I find one of the worst things is bananas. Horrible. I feel your pain. :(

HipHopOpotomus · 30/04/2011 23:26

The gave liquid made me gag and didn't work. I can't sleep upright due to SPD. Doc gave me Gaviscon Advance tablets which unjust take after every meal before I need it and it works most of the time. MUCH better than the liquid and on prescription too.

Good luck with managing this - I've had it for months. Last 3 months been more bearable due to above.

theonlyhb2 · 01/05/2011 10:28

Joannezipan, i am SO glad you said that about bananas! i was fine with them up until a few weeks ago, and yesterday I ate one and thought I was going to die. Then I thought I was over reacting as was fine with them before! I shall avoid now

I hated the liquids, against the dairy advice, I found eating a live bio yogurt in bed helped.

I like the fruit dr oetker ones.

Full fat milk works, semi skimmed makes it worse. Greek yogurt also helped mine :) (the full fat variety)

mrsdaz · 01/05/2011 16:28

I have tablets from the doctor and gaviscon on repeat prescription! Cant figure out what makes mine worse really but the above seem to help
