slimming world in pregnancy

Hi

Prior to getting pregnant I had piled on about a stone and a half over the past couple of years and felt pretty gross. In the first 21 weeks of my pregnancy I have gained another stone and a half. I look and feel bad and its not good for me or baby and after being told by a colleague that slimming world is approved by the Royal College of Midwifes during pregnancy.

So, I went along and was duly appalled by the above weight gain. I understand that is is safe to lose a little excess body fat during pregnancy as the baby satisfies it's requirements first, i was just wandering what would be a safe amount. Im thinking that as Im expected to gain roughly a pound a week at this point, that if I aim to not gain this pound, it equates to losing a pound of body fat roughly. Im just finding all this excess weight makes me sluggish, exercise harder work than it should be, and i would like to sort the issue out now rather than just getting bigger and bigger and putting myself and baby at increased risk of high birth weight and pre-eclampsia without introducing another set of risks altogether.

Has anyone done this or similar and experienced any problems as a result?

Thanks x

Hi - I am not in the same situation as yourself - but can confirm that Slimming World is the 'only' diet approved by the Royal College of Midwifes.

I am 29 weeks pregnant, and have been a huge fan of Slimming World for many years. Whilst i am not currently attending a class, my knowledge of the diet has helped to manage my weight gain.

However it's not a diet you would do for a short while until you reach a target and then go back to the old eating habits, it is a permanent new way of healthy eating whilst getting all the necessary daily intake of nutrients and vitamins, without starving yourself or going without treats.

You should have been given a form by your consultant, and your weight will be monitored by your consultant and midwife. Your midwife will have to regularly review this and sign off her approval, that you are not doing anything that would deny the growth of your baby in any way.

I wouldn't overly concern yourself with how much you should or shouldn't be gaining/losing, but be assured that you have put yourself on the right track to getting to where you would like to be and for both you and your baby's health.

I wish you all the best in your progress.

I lost 1.5 stone with SW then got pregnant with twins (they are 1 week old) and I put on 2.5 stone but I weighed myself today and have actually lost it all!!!! It was totally all babies and fluid etc. I loosly followed the diet and it was my 3rd pregnancy and I felt alot better through it too. I'm rejoining next week to start shifting the weight from the first pregnancy lol
