Just wondered what people thought as someone told me it would calm my IU?

IU? Can't work out what that is (probably being a bit thick, and it's dead obvious)

But anyway, NO.

Castor oil can be used to bring on labour (Makes you poo, and can stimulate contractions) None of the chemists round here will sell it to a pregnant woman.

Or would you be rubbing it on somewhere?! In which case, I don't see why not.... Grin

Lol IU is irritable uterus....not sure about the rubbing was told to drink or cook with it but heard it tastes vile!!!!

Never heard of that one, tastes awful so if you do want to drink it perhaps try the capsules but I don't see how that's going to help.

Nor do I especially if Almighty says it brings on the labour I'm 34 wks tomoz and it's a little early....lol just googled it. Says it irriates it more by bringing on dhiarhea!!!! Will stick to raspberry leaf tea x

Ah right! No I'd advise against it then, especially at this late stage. I had a horrible virus when I was pregnant with DD1 and had lots of diarrhoea and went into labour and gave birth at 34 weeks.

Stick to the tea!

Was your baby ok?

Irritable uterus best helped by drinking lots of water and resting! Had it with two of my three pregnancies and it is not fun.

Rasperberry leaf tea also not a good idea at it helps tone the uterus, if you are already having contractions, that is more than enough toning I think!!!!

Leilababyno1 · 28/04/2011 15:54

Savannah-Why would you want to take something that 'may' promote uterine contractions, if you have an irritable uterus??!!

Hummm, don't know who has advised you of this- but I would stay well away of anything that may promote premature labour...34 wks is A LOT early, even 36 wks is still considered premature. Baby could have problems breathing and need SCBU.

Follow the doctors advise re your IU, other than that try to be patient and let baby come when he/she is good and ready...Smile

AlmightyCitrus · 28/04/2011 17:49

Oh yes, Savannah, she was fine. Just a bit on the small side. Didn't need SCBU so we were quite lucky in that respect.

Now she is 11 and bloody annoying turning into a charming young lady. Grin

Am sure that a few years ago the official line was not to take castor oil as this can cause maternal dehydration which leads to distress for the baby?

Or has this been disproven now along with not eating peanuts, using foam mattresses etc?

Where can I buy some? Looked in sainsbury's today but could find it. What section would it be in?

CS booked for just over a weeks time. Would be great if I went into labour before then, that way I could avoid the VBAC/ELCS debate with the consultant!

Boogiemumma · 28/04/2011 22:11

Please don't take Castor Oil - it does taste foul and but moreover can cause labour to start and in my case caused a placental abruption which is where part of the placenta comes away. This is really dangerous for you and the baby - can casue fetal death. I had a massive bleed and had to be induced with subsequent delivery issues. Fortunately my DS and myself both came out of it ok but the risk I unknowingly took could have had a very different outcome. Chemists don't sell this to pregnant women for good reason. Be patient and let baby come in its own time, good luck x
