is it safe to have a baby at 36 weeks? Doctors are saying that I will need my cervical suture removed and I'm scared its too early to have the baby.

36 weeks is totally viable - fingers crossed all goes well for you! FWIW I am being delivered at 35 weeks...

I had DS at 36 weeks (don't know why, he just arrived early) and he was fine, small but fine. No SCBU or anything. What do the doctors say?

jenga079 · 27/04/2011 23:07

I was born at 34 weeks. I'm fine (I think!)

AtAmber · 27/04/2011 23:11

I had my first and second at 36 weeks and the third at 38 weeks (it felt like he was late as I thought I would have him at 36 like the others). They were all fine.

I had dc2 at 36 + 6 and he was 8lb 10oz! He needed a bit of oxygen to get him breathing, which I don't think is that unusual for babies born at full term anyway. Other than that, he was and is, completely fine. Good luck!

8lb at 36 weeks!! That's a brilliant weight!

The docs will work out the advantages/disadvantages to both you and the baby of keeping the pregnancy going for longer. Sometimes it's better for the baby to come out.

32 weeks is the holy grail on the antenatal wards - when you reach that, everyone breathes a sigh of relief!

My boys were born at 33 and 34 weeks and both came home after 2 weeks.

Jacksterbear · 28/04/2011 13:11

I had my 2 at 35+3 and 36+5, they were both fine.

doodledee · 28/04/2011 13:43

My DD was born at 35+6 2 weeks ago, she did have breathing problems and spent 9 days on the neonatal unit but is home and well now. Niece born at 35 weeks - needed no special care and home after 3 days obsevation on ward with mum. Generally 36 weeks is very safe and considered pretty much full term - benefits for you will obviously outweigh risks, good luck xx

Ds3 was born at home (natural delivery, came of his own accord and home birth was planned) at 36 weeks plus 3 (I think). Was small but perfect and all went well. Don't worry.

MissCKitty · 28/04/2011 18:14

My baby was born at 36 weeks due to my pre eclampsia. She is currently curled up asleep on my chest. She's now 16 weeks and although she is a little smaller than the average she is perfectly healthy Grin

CurlyCasper · 28/04/2011 18:21

mine was born at 36+1. A few feeding issues, but all dandy from less than a week later. 5lb 10. you'll both be fine.

BigSooz · 28/04/2011 18:22

I had one of mine at 36+5. She was fine and we were home in 48 hours (and that was after a section!).

faffmaff · 28/04/2011 20:45

When you think that 37 weeks is considered 'cooked' it's less scary. I had DS at 36 weeks and he took a few days to learn to feed but otherwise was just fine. And just because the stitch comes out doesn't necessarily mean instant birth!

Most people who have cervical sutures removed at 36 weeks do not deliver straight away anyway which always seems a bit strange to me, its almost like the suture gets your body used to not delivering and keeps it that way even once its out! iyswim!

Even if it does come out then, probably won't even need to go to neonatal unit if it is a normal size, may need to stay in for a day or two extra to get feeding established and sort out any jaundice problems that are much more likely with pre term babies. [cgrin]
