Possible TMI - have waters broken?

I'm 26+6 and am 'leaking' a significant amount of creamy coloured liquid. It's definitely not urine, but is thinner than the discharge I've been getting.

Is this my waters?! How would I know?!

I have no idea but would just give your hospital labour ward a quick call, a midwife will be able to answer any questions you have.

I called them a couple of times after I gave birth and they were really helpful Smile, from what I remember though you do start getting extra fluid later in pregnancy, as I started wearing pantyliners.

Imnotaslimjim · 26/04/2011 22:37

I did get a lot of discharge after about 6 months pregnant, same as Lavita, I had to wear a pantyliner most days. If you are worried, give the labour ward a call and see what they say, they don't mind

I had a similar sounding thing, also very thin, and it was just discharge. Normally your waters won't look creamy, but definitely call the MW or labour ward if you're concerned.

I had that and went to the hospital and they took a swap and it turned out to be the start of a bad case of thrush so defo worth giving them a call, they really wont mind.

LoopyLoopsNincompoop · 26/04/2011 23:53

Call hospital now please.

LoopyLoopsNincompoop · 27/04/2011 00:04

And please let us know how you get on. Good luck, I hope it's nothing. :)

If do you pop along to the hospital - remember to take a soggy pad with you. Sounds gross, but they will do the swab from the pad initially.

madhattershouse · 27/04/2011 00:14

Could be the lead up to it. A bit like the change just before a period. Often the mucus plug comes away when the waters go and that cannot be mistaken. A watery discharge sounds more like a hormonal change...getting ready perhaps?

Thank you ladies & sorry for posting & running. I read some more online that suggested lying down for half an hour & then seeing if it 'gushed' when I got up. Incredibly, despite being worried, I just fell asleep & didn't wake up till 3am. Anyway, no gushing & i still have no pain or anything so hopefully it's nothing. I'm going to stick a pad on & call my own midwife when she gets into the office at 9.

Thank you again for your advice. Sorry for being asleep so initially ignoring most of it! I'll update you later.

Hi this happened to me at 28 weeks and I was sent to the delivery suite at the hospital by my midwife. They took a water sample, monitored me for about half an hour then examined me and said I had a water infection and that at that stage in pregnancy infections can present like this (watery discharge) without any other symptoms/pain. I was given antibiotics and everything was fine.

Hope you have spoken to your midwife now and are feeling better.

LoopyLoopsNincompoop · 27/04/2011 09:52

This happened to me twice. The first pregnancy I ignored it, thinking it was excess discharge. DTD1's membranes had in fact ruptured. She died, and DTD2 had to be delivered at 32 weeks to save her. I wish I'd done something.

This pregnancy it happened again. I panicked and went in to the hospital. They did all the tests and found nothing wrong. I did feel silly but had to check.

Please do check. I know it is unlikely, but when the worst happens it really is the worst.

Oh Loopy, I'm so sorry to read that. Thank you for sharing. It shocked me into persevering with seeing someone.

So, I called my own midwife this morning. She referred me to maternity triage. Called them. They said to see GP. I'm now sat in GP's waiting room waiting for an obstetrician to call her back. She's fuming with triage: 'what do they think I can do? You need a scan or an amniostick to see if you've lost fluid'

So, I'm none the wiser yet, but LO has been kicking all day & just heard heartbeat so that's reassuring.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, but am really glad you're getting checked out. It really is best to be on the safe side.

Good luck, let us know how you get on. :)

jenga079 · 27/04/2011 18:14

Ok, so it seems everything is ok. Doc spoke with triage & they've said that if it was my waters I'd have really gushed this morning so they're sure it's okay.

Doc's checked & cervix closed, heartbeat is strong & 'leaking' has stopped. She's done swabs for infections & told me if it happens again to go straight to triage as they can do an amniostick or scan.

Me & the bump are going to curl up in bed with a book while DP makes tea Smile

Thank you again for your support. I miscarried last year & this will be my first LO so I really don't know what's normal in pregnancy and what's not.

Loopy, i really am so sorry for your loss & really do appreciate you sharing your experience to help other people.

So glad it's OK. Never think you're being silly though, any problem is worth checking out. :)
