Oral thrush- should I take the remedy...

I've had a very sore tongue for months now. I ignored it at first as thought it was just ulcers or something similar. It got worse and more painful and when I went to the doctor I was diagnosed with vitamin deficiency. When it didnt' clear up I went to a different doctor who diagnosed a fungal infection (thrush) and put me on a mouthwash and gel for 10 days. This did not clear it up so I went to a different doctor who said it was definitely thrush, but did not want to give me anything else because of my pregnancy. I agreed with her and we agreed to keep on with the mouthwash and gel for a bit longer. I did so and it seemed to get a bit better, but now a week on it is really bad again. I have big painful spots on my tongue. The doctor had said that if it didn't go away she would give me the oral anti-thrush pills, but both of us were reluctant. So... do I put up with this? Try natural remedies? Or take the pills? Anyone taken the pills during pregnancy? I also had vaginal thrush and it cleared up with pessaries, so I think I must have a bad case in my system.

No experience of it in pregnancy but had it on my nipples whilst breastfeeding and dd1 had it in her mouth so we both had to treat both at the same time.

Is there another doc you can go to for a second opinion?

I'd avoid 'natural' remedies - tend to leave you lighter of pocket and not much else!

Are you sure it is thrush? Could it be a condition called Geographical Tongue?

expatnow · 26/04/2011 10:38

Even more confused now... I just spoke to my gyne who thinks it is not thrush but possibly viral. I am not in the UK so the system here is a bit confusing. I have already seen 3 different doctors and been diagnosed with vitamin deficiency, thrush, thrush again and now possible virus.

I'm not sure it is thrush, but the diagnosis seemed ot make sense, particularly when combined with the fact I developed vaginal thrush a month or so later.

neenewps I had heard of Geographical tongue, but not sure it is this- tell me more!

4pudding agreed about 'natural remedies'- what I meant was change my diet to reduce yeast.

Well some say that Geographical tongue can be caused by a vitamin deficiency.

It is where patches appear on the tongue and look red raw. You can also get fissures on the tongue. They can be painful but more often than not don't cause you any pain.

If you google geographical tongue you will see a whole load of images that you may be able to relate your tongue to.

I have it and it isn't pleasant but doesn't bother me. I find that tomatoes aggravate it but as I love tomatoes I refuse to stop eating them!

Hmm- I did look online and I'm just not sure... Sort of looks like that. I had thought of it, but ruled it out weeks ago for some reason. Definitely aggravated by tomatoes. It is more that there are white rings on the sides of my tongue and the spots are very painful.

Hmm it does sound like it... Mine just suddenly appeared from nowhere a few years ago.

I'm sorry to say that I am yet to find anything to soothe it or cure it. I am conscious of it too so when i laugh I always make sure my mouth isn't too wide open... that's probably a good thing to be honest :)

If it is thrush you can adjust your diet to clear it. I found the Harcombe Diet really helpful (you'll have to tweak it given you're PG but it does work)

To be honest, it doesn't really sound like it - but its no bad thing to get rid of it before the baby is born. I have never experienced pain like thrush in my breasts, so would recommend anything you can do to avoid it, do it!

Good luck - hope it all goes well Smile

Hi, I know it's been a long time since you posted so you may not see this, but did you end up taking the oral tablets? I've had oral thrush for 3 weeks and 3 courses of nystatin but doesn't seem to be clearing up. Doctors aren't sure what best thing to do is and I'm worried about taking anything potentially harmful.
