Back pain

I went for a nip round the shops yesterday and when I got out of the car, I noticed the right side of my back was really painful...like a stabbing achey pain at wasit level. It got worse and worse yesterday till my lovely DH massaged it a little bit and then filled me up a hot water bottle and set me up on the sofa. Its feeling a little bit better today but still hurts.

Is this normal? I'm 27+6 and I have noticed bump has changed shape and done some serious growing over the last couple of days. Kicks are higher now too so wondering if its the sudden increase in weight and position of bump thats set my back off????

Anyone else had this?

Oh and does anyone have any tips on how to prevent/ease back pain?

I've had a fairly consistent (but thankfully usually low-level) pain in my back in the same sort of place. I think it is fairly normal.

It often is something as simple as the baby pressing on a nerve but you know the standard advice - if things get worse or you're still concerned, call midwife!

If it is a nerve pain thing then I found moving between sitting/standing/walking/digging/lying down etc all helped (ie, try not to stay in the same position for too long). Also in general getting the baby weight to my front rather than my back helped (that's where the digging came in - it was on hands and knees stuff!) but you can also sit 'backwards' on a dining chair, lean over a ball or (and I discovered this late) lie down on piles of duvets on your front for a bit.

I didn't want to seem alarmist so didn't mention before but my thoughts exactly Sargesaweyes. I scared myself a bit by googling (yeah I know!).

I'm thinking if its kidneys the pain would be worse this morning not better?!?!

Thanks FirstVix I feel a bit reassured now :)

I spoke too soon, just got out of arm chair and now in agony again :( Definitely helps to lean forward...am now leant over a beanbag...which makes me think this must be nerve pain. Report back on what nhs direct say Sargesaweyes.....I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to feel like you wasting peoples time, I feel the same, hence copping out and asking you brill MN ladies instead ;)

I'm 34 weeks and started getting a constant dull ache in my back earlier this week made worse my sitting down all day at work and which got bad enough to leave me in tears by the end of the week.

It's settled in my left hip now and I got myself to my GP on Thursday as the thought of it getting worse over the BH weekend with no access to doctors was not something I want to gamble on.

TBH the student GP I saw wasn't great. She said it was probably due to the increased levels of relaxin, ligaments stretching and increased weight in late pregnancy etc and offered to print me some bits off the internet. I gently pointed out I'd read most of the bits on the NHS website etc already, was aware of everything she'd mentioned and had tried warm baths, hot water bottles and paracetamol which hadn't worked hence why I was there.

She went to speak to "her boss" as there was "nothing else mentioned in her book" so she couldn't give me any more advice! Once back she suggested a urine check as apparently there's a UTI that can present itself as back pain as you've said OP (came back negative) and after I asked, she agreed to refer me to a physio who I'm seeing on Wednesday and hopefully is going to fit me with a support belt.

I've found sleeping on that side causes me a lot of pain in the past few days so am trying to avoid that and hope the physio can offer some more useful advice, might be worth trying to get yourself a referral if you can next week OP. Hope it doesn't bother you too much in the mean time :)

eeh didn't realise that was quite such a ramble, sorry!

Thanks for reporting back Sargesaweyes, thats interesting...My MW did send my last sample off for further testing as she suspected a urine infection as had alot of protein but results came back totally clear.

After taking just 1paracetemol and leaning over beanbag for a while the pain pretty much disappeared all afternoon (oh the relief!) but has now come back :( so am back over the beanbag. I think if its as bad tomorrow I'll book an apptmt with the dr.

Back ache sucks, my MW was thoroughly unsympathetic during my last apptmt and I totally know how you feel bananarama...so glad i'm not at work today, don't know how i'd have coped.

Hope you manage to get comfy and are feeling a bit better girls x
