I have seen that Boots and Sainsburys do their own but haven't really noticed any other brands. What other brands are out there and which (in your opinion) is best? TIA. x

I liked the Mothercare ones with the wings, they really did stay put, didn't scrunch up much, and were really absorbent.

LDNlady · 22/04/2011 21:41

Oooh good, there are ones with wings. I was starting to wonder because I remember (back in the day) :o when Simplicity pads were still around which of course didn't have wings and they were AWFUL at containment when on my period so I am pleased to hear there are ones with wings.

I really liked Tescos own brand, also used Boots own. Just had dd3 and never had a leakage problem, but a tip midwife gave me was to use two on top of each other for the first few days.

CBear6 · 22/04/2011 21:45

Don't bother with paper knickers either, I found them to be hideously uncomfortable and vile. I bought a multipack of smartprice knickers from Asda, was around £3-£4 for five pairs, in a size bigger than usual. I used them, washed them, etc and then just binned them once the bleeding was over. They were cotton so were nice and comfy and the elastic didn't dig in or rest against anywhere that was tender, they also held the pad better than the paper ones too.

I actually ended up using prefold nappies as I couldn't bear any of them! I don't get on with disposable sanitary towels normally though so if not an issue for you it might not matter. If I ever have another baby though I'll be ordering some washable ones. So much more comfy.

LDNlady · 22/04/2011 21:53

Oh believe me CBear6 I had absolutely no intention at all of using those bloody disposable knickers! Urgh! By the way are these the pads you're talking about www.mothercare.com/Mothercare-Sterile-Maternity-Towels-6pk/dp/B0011WL3XY?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_9&nodeId=42799041&sr=1-9&qid=1303505285

These ones:

They were in 3 for 2 when I bought them so it's worth keeping an eye out for them going on special offer. I had stitches and they didn't irritate them at all either.

moodymoo · 22/04/2011 22:55

The Mothercare ones get my vote too. They do thin ones too which are just as good as the regular ones.

Bunnyjo · 22/04/2011 23:12

I had Boots ones with DD, which were OK, but have just bought Mothercare ones (the thin ones with wings) this time round, so am happy to see they're proving to be popular.

4pudding · 23/04/2011 08:28

I used Always Nighttime and will do again- found them much better than maternity pads.

For knickers bought packs of the really high granny knickers from M&S in a size 16 and just threw them away afterwards. So much more comfy than disposable paper maternity knickers.

mamaesi · 23/04/2011 08:47

I agree. get large cotton black pants that you dont care about...

then i did always extra long with wings first. then a big mothercare pillow thing on top, which i changed often.

best advice i was given was, buy how many you think you need, then double it!

frakyouveryverymuch · 23/04/2011 08:56

I have natracare and lovely net knickers (high chance I'd end up with a CS but didn't in the end). No problems with stitches and the nets are holding them in place nicely.

2BoysTooLoud · 23/04/2011 09:05

Tescos own brand mat pads here. [No wings though].

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 23/04/2011 09:08

I liked tesco ones last time so I got a bunch of them again, and also have a big pack of the mothercare ones because it was reduced...

doodledee · 23/04/2011 14:59

Forget maternity pads if you're anything like me you'll need tena lady - bled for couple of days, never heavy but pelvic floor bloody shot to bits - no control over bladder 2 weeks post birth....not good

LDNlady · 23/04/2011 19:33

Well, I wish I could forget them but I gotta take something to hospital and until I've had bubs I'm not going to know about my pelvic floor. I have been doing all the exercises so fingers crossed it won't be too er leaky in the wee department!

Thanks ladies, have ordered a mix of the thin and thick mothercare ones today. Hopefully they'll do exactly as they say on the pack!

kotex night time pads in the black packet are better IMO than the maternity pads i have as they are thicker and more cushioned!!

if you need any extra i would recommend those

prolificwillybreeder · 23/04/2011 20:29

I used boots but preferred Sainsburys ones last time.
Will get some Mothercare ones to try this time.
I got through so many at first last time so definitely buy more than you think!

firstsupermum · 23/04/2011 20:35

i just use any one, any brand, i bought morrison's brand to use this time, i realy dont mind as long as they do the job. i bought them last time they was good no problem at all, i also used tecso and sainsbury's, as i buy anyone's in offer, this time, i went to morrison, they was in offer, good price, i bought two, even if i am due in july, but i grab the bargain.

mumcanIaskaquestion · 23/04/2011 20:36

1st time I used mat pads and they weren't great. The second and third time I took the advice of my midwife and used kotex night time pads and 2 at a time and it was a lot better.

MooseyMoo · 24/04/2011 09:03

Another vote for Kotex night time (black packet). I have heavy periods anyway so used to large amount of bleeding. These pads were the best for padding (as your bits will be sore/achey). I tired Boots own and Mothercare also.

When in hospital I used their pads at first but doubled them with Always nighttime as they had wings.

CBear6 · 24/04/2011 09:40

See my midwife told me that a maternity pad is a must for the first few days because it's easier to spot signs of infection or problem like clots when using one. Now I'm wondering if she's in cahoots with the maternity pad industry.

heather1980 · 24/04/2011 09:49

tesco ones for me too, the boots ones gave me a rash.
my mw told me not to use normal pads because they have a chemical in them to stop smells and that maternity ones don't. she said that they can cause irritation and infections, don't know if it's true though.
