Title says it really
Have had 2 MC in the last year and am now nearly 6 weeks pregnant again{smile]
I would really feel much better if I saw a heartbeat sooner rather than have to wait till dating scan at ca 12 weeks.
Thank you for your replies.

I dont think you can always see a heartbeet before ten weeks, i had a scan at 7 weeks and you could'nt realy see anything so went back at ten weeks and could only just see a heartbeet. Not realy sure about getting a private scan but if you say you are having a few pains/cramps (lie) your gp would send you for a scan at your early pregnancy clinic.

Definately lie - say you've had some bleeding adn are worried given your history of m/c. Your GP should be able to refer you the next day to your nearest Early Pregnancy Unit. Although at 6 weeks it can be hard to see a heartbeat by 7 weeks a radiographer should be able to. Even if they can't they can scan you and measure the size of the yolk sac, then measure it again the following week to see if it has grown.

stay away from queen charlottes the midwifes are mean and nasty, they are too busy to listen to you at the antenatal clinic. you are just one in a herd of sheep. its a complete production line. the midwifesw on the antenatal ward are pure evil, laughing at you when you are asking them to help, telling you they have called the dr for you when they actually haven't, never giving you meds on time and i correct way. labour ward was better, nice rooms etc but you will be lucky to se a midwife whilst you are in labour, emergency buttons dont work either. be prepared for the midwifes only speaking a few audible english words. the midwifes are rude when you ring, when you go for an antenatal appointment, when you have a pregnancy probelem, when you give birth.
the hospital is nice looking and the rooms look nice but nothing works in there, and the managemnet and midwifes are in complete chaos.

I can understand how worried you must be dangirl.

I've had 3 scans at 6-7 weeks ( different pregnanies) and each time they could see the heartbeat. i got scanned this early as i am theoretically at risk of an ectopic pregnancy as i have a twisted fallopian tube on one side.

If you had bleeding or some sharp abdominal pain they woudl scan you at an early pregnancy unit to rule out an ectopic pregnancy ( which is life threatening so cant be ignored).

thank you all.
Yes I know that I could lie, but don't really like to

slinkstah, oh my goodness that doesn't sound very good! I have not got much of a choice re where to give birth and it has to be QCH.
I had most of my antenatal there for my DD1 which I can't complain about. Ended up having her abroad as she arrived 8 weeks early.
I sounds like you must have had a bad experience there?

I just thought it would be easier to have the possible private scan done there as I am to continue the antenatal care at the same place.

Hi dangirl.

I live in Surrey so can't advise on Queen Charlotte's but can tell you about early scans.I have also had 2 mc in the last year. I am now 11 weeks into my third pregnancy. Like you I have been extremely anxious that the same thing will happen again so have had 2 private scans. The first was at what I thought was 6+2 but turned out to be more like 6+6. The heart beat could def be seen. The second was at 9+3 and the heart beat was going like the clappers! Am now holding my breath until my 12 wk scan in about 10 days.

dangirl · 04/11/2005 10:49

loulou14,
did you have the scans done privately or on the NHS? If private, how much did you pay for them?
I have already asked my GP for early scan but she said they won't do them without any pain/bleeding.

dangirl - i had an early private scan at the portland earlier this year. can't remember exact cost, but was in the region of £100-150. think you can get in quite quickly for one, but think they may only do it from 7-8 wks. HTH?

Loulou14 · 04/11/2005 11:22

I was under a BUPA consultant after an ERPC in June and was due a follow up for that when I was around 6 wks pregnant. So he was able to refer me for the private scans. On paper the first one was to check viability and the second what's called a reassurance scan. They cost £176 each.

My GP assurred me I would get early scans at my EPU but nothing materialised. When I phoned the hospital they said they are so busy they can't even offer reassurrance scans after 3 mc let alone a mere 2! So we decided for piece of mind to go privately and pay ourselves (BUPA won't pay if things are OK). I have to say it has been well worth it.

dangirl · 04/11/2005 12:45

loulou14,
that is pretty much how I feel.
I am almost positive that I will go for private viability scan - just for the reassurance as I am rather nervous this time round and just can't wait too long. Last MC was a missed one so wasn't discovered untill 12 weeks when I got some bleeding and foetus was only 7 weeks. Not nice to think that I was so far gone and to have told family etc.
I know that £100 will be worth it.
